Should the stem/handlebars flex?

I put the 110mm stem (giant, orig from my roady) on my giant trance1 MTB. taking off the raceface 80mm.

Seems the bars/stem are flexing, its like the clamps arent tight but they are, so?

anyone?

it could be that the stem is just more flexible than the one you took off. but first, go over the steps to install the stem properly to make sure you didn't make a mistake.

is the stem a 31.8mm clamp diameter? otherwise, if you took a stem from your road bike to your mtn bike, you took a 26.0mm stem and put it together with 25.4mm bars. so even if you tightened it all the way, you may not have adequate clamping force.

just a thought.

Road and MTB standards are a little different. Standard mountain bars are 25.4 and oversize are 31.8. Standard road bars are 26.0, and oversize are again 31.8.

There are other sizes, Nitto still makes 25.4 road bars and Cinneli bars used to be 26.4 but I don't think they ever made threadless stems in that size. But if you are using an OEM stem from a road bike its more than likely 26.0
