Long story somewhat short....My brother remodels foreclosed houses and resells. He found this frame in a basement, thought I could use it. The frame had been stripped down to bare aluminum, no decals. I have no ide what manufacturer it is, but after looking it over it was decent, light, and usuable. After some measuring I figured out the frame size would fit me, and it was a frame for 29" wheels. I cleaned it up, gave it a $10 paint job to avoid oxidizing, and found enough spare parts to end up with some sort of 26lb unknown rigid/beater/29er. Took it for a spin this morning (froze my arse off) and it rides really well. I am impressed with the handling, and may even go so far as to upgrade the front end with a suspension fork, Rockshox Recon Silver Solo air or similar. cheers!

Thanksgiving Day Ride

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...29917067_n.jpg

Replaced the bars with Chromag OSX and the Stem with an Easton EA70 after the ride.

Going to have to replace the wheelset soon as well, all the spokes are corroded from Chlorine. That or thinking about buying a SE Stouts and moving all the parts I can to that and going to a rigid 29er.

Last one! No more builds after this. This one is to replace the stolen bmx of number threes, he's our quality control guy hence the tougher build than the Voodoo.

Frame is a Spank smoke, the Alivio crankset will be replaced with SS of some desciption real soon, front dr didn't work out at all. Dad might be able to borrow this one.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=286265http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=286264OK, so dislocated ankle middle of July, riding season in Mich. was pretty much over for me at that point. Sitting around bored out of my mind- decided to do my first build. Had been playing around with a couple of older CrMo mountain bikes, wanted something new. Prefer a hardtail, so bought a new in box 2010 frame and went from there. Still need a seat and some real pedals(still hard to turn ankle out of the SPD's) but looks pretty good so far. Supposed to be 62 Monday- think I'll give it a trial run:)

N+1, I wanted a full suspension for some time and this one was pretty cheap. Three years old so I'll have to do some shock servicing soon. Works very well for me with Schwalbe Ice Spike Pro tires.

Nice!

fuzzbox 12-12-12 12:13 AM

Thanks! My only issue is the largest chainring is a 39 and it kind sucks going downhill since it tops out really fast, however, that was on the road. I'll find out Thursday if I need to swap that out.

ncfisherman 12-12-12 07:03 AM

Looks good. Might want to pull the stem and get the front derailleur cable routed around the headtube.

you must have found a big hill... just coast.

39x11 should get you over 30mph if you can spin >100rpm. But even 39x12 (I don't know what cassette you have) is almost 23mph @ 90rpm. So, I think you'll find the 39 is plenty on trails and you can just coast down big hills on paved roads.

Haha yea but I'm am trying to do this 24 hr race and the course has something called "the bi**hes" which is a long steep descend to a ridiculous climb and this repeats for 5 or 6 times and as you go it gets worse and worse. So if I topped out on this hill that means I'm going to top out pretty quick on the descend since on a previous bike I was using a 44x11 or 12 not exactly sure and topped out halfway down. But that means I'm going to have more climbing ... yay me!

Have you considered a road crankset? A triple would definitely work, but if a 50/34 compact is low enough for you-- remember, you can (probably) still use your MTB rear derailleur but you can't run an 11-36 cassette unless you have a long cage RD.

fuzzbox 12-18-12 12:42 AM

I was going to switch out to a 3x10 but I figured I'd give the 2x10 a shot since competitive was pretty dry on parts the day I ordered it. I think it might be fine now that I've tested it on a trail. I can always switch the part out if I come across a big issue and they said I'd just have to pay the price difference of whatever I would get.

My 1x1. Thinking about going to bigger tires. (has Tima ATAC Roc clipless pedals now)

That Surly looks like a fun rig! Reminds me that I need to build up a single speed rigid.

Here's mine as she stands ATM (after a well deserved bath). 2012 EX8. Still in need of a dropper and might bump my 70mm stem down to a 50 in the near future.

Sleek and sano. Pedals aren't Crampons but have a similar profile - - what are they?

Opinions 12-21-12 11:36 AM

They are Dark cycle arachnids. Amazing pedals with insane grip. Probably the have the best grip out of any I've ever ridden.

I'm running an e13 XCX-ST. Would love to have gone with one that covers both the top or the ring and the bottom but couldn't because there are no ISCG tabs and the bottom bracket is a press-fit. But the one I have does its job well.
