Anyone else looking forward to winter?
I know I am! I've not been mountain biking a year, so really looking forward to it with the bare trees and cool breeze. No rhyme intended. A year ago I was biking... at 5' 7 or so on a big box bike with 24 inch wheels. Full suspension, you know the deal. Now I have my built-from-the-ground-up Specialized w/ xt drive train, and you guessed it, 26 inch wheels. Then the new roadie but thats another story..
I biked very little over the summer; I'm more of a fall/winter person.
Anyone else looking forward to it? If so, what do you like about it?

Still kicking.
Fall yes, but with the weather this summer here in NJ, I'm afraid that, we're going to get a ton of snow this winter.

Why the hell would I look forward to winter? Winter means plowing and not biking.

Washington State got NJ's summer this year, and NJ got Washington State's summer and likely winter.

I sometimes love the challenge of trying to climb an icy hill with home made studded tires...but truthfully...the older I get, the more I just plain freakin' hate winter. My lungs burn, I tire quickly, too dadgum many layers to have to burden yourself with...suk egg!
Here's me...our first pittance of snow...taking my daughter for a ride. MUSH...MUSH!!

Powder and packing, then there's ice packed as well.

Heck yeah...took the skis and snowboards down from the rack this past weekend! If we have as much snow this winter as we had rain this summer, I see a lot of sick days in my future.
As for riding - not so much. Riding frost heave isn't much fun when it's collapsing beneath you. If there's snow on the bike trails, x-c skis are under me instead of the bike.

I love riding in powder, new snow, very shallow day old (melt'n'froze) snow, and ice. The problem is if you have like 3"+ of day old snow that has somebody elses tracks in it and its gotten cold and crusted the surface...your tires just wander wherever the tracks are. If it's been hiked like our local trail usually get...then it's flippin hard to go straight. The long studs are magnificent though. I think if I could do a solid foam tube with long studs...it'd prob. last several winters. My last set (pictured) lasted me two winters.
Deeper powder is fun though.

We don't have much in the way of winters. It gets down to about 30 in the early mornings where I ride, so that means I get to sleep in and ride later than I do in summer. Can't go to Tahoe for riding, which sucks. And no more backpacking for the season

I've noticed that a Granny is a wonderful thing for winter climbing. Keep the legs spinning faster with less load, stay seated keeping weight on your rear tire for climbing.

ya winter doesn't start for another 2 1/2 months or so down here in texas so it's wonderful riding for the "fall" period. Then when winter starts it gets to about 40 during the day with some clouds so not too bad if you are moving. No snow but ice every couple of years for a day or so. then by february it starts warming back up to the 70's or so. Winter is not that bad.

I went to get my daughters' skis for the season in late August! I've been flipping through all the ski magazines so I guess my mindset is already in winter.
