Sure I can

I'm just sick and tired of hearing how SS makes you better rider. What makes you a better rider is good old fashion seat time.

From reading people's posts here, it sounds like the only reason it makes you a better rider is because it forces you to compensate for the handicap, thus excercising skills a geared bike rider doesn't have to excercise as much. Theoretically, you'd get the same benefits (or disadvantages depending on how you look at it) by simply picking a gear and not shifting, but honestly who's not going to shift if they can? In spite of that, it doesn't really bother me when it's listed as a reason for SS, because it seems like sort of an aside to the better reasons: less maintenance, less cost, and just fun.

I agree...SS makes you either get off and walk or gut it out. You have those options with a geared bike...+ option 3: shift. When I went from a SS to a 1x9 I was like "What do I do with all these gears?!" It was so dang easy climbing hills in like 3rd gear...I got bored. When my knees requested that I quit SS'ing...I got used to the 1x9 and felt the same with I granny'd my Komodo. When all the mud goes away and I ride the Komodo all the time...I feel like 1x9'ing is tough.

Somewhat true. When I was riding SS a lot, I found my geared riding was improving - picking cleaner lines to save momentum, staying in a higher gear more often, braking less to conserve momentum as well. Stuff that has stayed with me, and is most certainly beneficial. I've tried the riding a geared bike and not shifting thing, and it really doesn't do it the same way. Granted, yes, it's all in your head in that case.

Sure, it isn't for everyone.

I just get irritated when people who have never actually tried it bag on it. Much like bagging on any kind of riding - try it before bagging on it.

FWIW, my only SS bikes now are my road bike and commuter bike, not that that matters.

Yeah, it is really about the bike and 7lbs! Riding a rigid SS is like having the gateway to awesomeness and total trail domination flung open for ya!

^^ So that's why I can't seem to keep up with Jared Graves and those guys! I'm not on a rigid, steel single-speed. Damn! Don't even have the 303R yet and I'm already having to think about an upgrade .

Now, now. You're extrapolating a bit too much there.

It's because your old.

And still likely a hell of a lot faster than me.
