Thanks guys.

I'm thinking about just getting normal brakes now, the reason being that there more cheep and I have a feeling they will be more powerful.

The reason I feel this is a bike that I used to have ages ago had normal brakes and they used to be more powerful than disc brakes.

So, are normal brakes better than disc brakes?

thanks
Paul

Bikes: Bike list is not a resume. Nobody cares.

No.

Only if "disc brakes" is limited to mechs, and "normal brakes" refers to hydraulic discs.

XT's are the BEST modulated brake on the market bar none. There are more expensive brake systems. There are more complicated brake systems. BUT, there are no better brake systems than XT's (well, maybe XTR's).

I looked at all the reviews, rode test bikes with each systems and came to my own conclusions. Conclusions which tend to match the ones developed by the professional magazine reviewers. XT.

Not sure I agree, but to each his own.

In my case I found the Hope M4 were way better than Elixirs CR or XTR's ( both 2010s) in stopping power.

so,it's your call my man!!
When was the last time you ripped a brake line (mech or hydro)? Both lines?

In the world of possibilities and probabilities this is very, very unlikely. What is likely is needing good brakes if you go down any "downhill". I went from mechanical BB7 to Formula Bianco and will never go back to the mechs. My hydros have been fantastic both from a setup, use and maintenance point of view.

Thanks for all the replys.
I'm sorry for slow reply don't have much time at min to use laptop

Any way, the reason I think normal brakes like Avid Shorty Ultimate or something would be better is because when I was about 12 - 13 my bike had normal brakes and when I brake they was so sharp that I weant over the handlebars.

So any way, what I'm thinking is

Avid Shorty Ultimate
&
Shimano SLX

The thing is, is that a good idea and what one to use on front and what one on the back?

Thanks
Paul

As long as your weight is in the right place, you shouldn't go over the bars no matter how powerful your brakes are.

Most people put the same brake front and back, unless their frame isn't disc compatible or something. You can run a bigger rotor up front for more stopping power if you want.
