Imo the only other time for big rotors is long descents that are steep or tech which require a lot of braking. After a while most people hands cramp up. Most newbies come to whistler (or any resort) with some dh experience. Within 4 hours their hands are paralyzed with pain. 10 runs and you have decended approx 33,000vert ft. 8 inches helps reduce a lot of that pain.

Past that and weight 6's are fine.

That was kinda what I was figuring.. Most people don't NEED 8" rotors although I guess for some people it's some sort of bragging rights. No clue, but I'm perfectly happy with my BB7's & 6" rotors.

<Chuckles to himself> I'm 255# and my 6 inch rotors are more than adequate for me to ride XC.

Fair enough.. I'm not terribly surprised, though... I was more or less picking a number out of thin air to make the point that if all you're doing is XC, 6" should be plenty. 8" is overkill in my book. Most normal people would be perfectly satisfied with 6". Bigger isn't always better.

True a lot can be said for good pad componds and good rotors regardless of size

what are BB7's? Who makes them? Oh, and I just found out that my rear will probobly not even hold an eight inch rotor...it would hit my frame. Maybe I will look into some nice v brakes or somthing...I don't want to go tearing up my disks after a week of use.

BB7's are the AVID mechanicals we know and love they introduced a cheaper version called the BB5 so they needed to make the distinction hence the new name.

They're wonderful breaks and the calipers are big and beefy.. I like 'em lots. People here seem to agree that they're excellent brakes. Best mechs for the price? or can anyone think of any better?

Best mechs period. Wouldn't recommend/use anything else.

Several brakes have been mentioned. Care to be a little more specific?

so it's ok for you to say shizznit but I can't say an altered word? Hmm sounds like a double-standard to me. Oh well.

Actually I use it as a Little Nicky reference as in "Popeye's Chicken is the Shizznit!"

Not you, the fact that someone edited my thread and removed what I said. Then said it in their post.

Like I said...mild word. What you said is slightly more offensive. Come on now, we aren't that strict here ...

Amazing how the thread goes from only like 10 posts to 47 when it strays off topic.
