Imo the only other time for big rotors is long descents that are steep or tech which require a lot of braking. After a while most people hands cramp up. Most newbies come to whistler (or any resort) with some dh experience. Within 4 hours their hands are paralyzed with pain. 10 runs and you have decended approx 33,000vert ft. 8 inches helps reduce a lot of that pain.
Past that and weight 6's are fine.

That was kinda what I was figuring.. Most people don't NEED 8" rotors although I guess for some people it's some sort of bragging rights. No clue, but I'm perfectly happy with my BB7's & 6" rotors.

Fair enough.. I'm not terribly surprised, though... I was more or less picking a number out of thin air to make the point that if all you're doing is XC, 6" should be plenty. 8" is overkill in my book. Most normal people would be perfectly satisfied with 6". Bigger isn't always better.

They're wonderful breaks and the calipers are big and beefy.. I like 'em lots. People here seem to agree that they're excellent brakes. Best mechs for the price? or can anyone think of any better?

Several brakes have been mentioned. Care to be a little more specific?

Amazing how the thread goes from only like 10 posts to 47 when it strays off topic.
