I've said this before and I'll say it again. I don't like flippy shifters because I want to run a different brand hydraulic disc brake system. If you choose flippy shifters/hydros, you have to use Shimano discs.
Don't like Shimano discs, don't want flippy shifters.
I'm sure I could get used to the motion, but I guess I'm a bit of a retro-grouch when it comes to my shifters.
Plus, the lever breaking thing is a huge turn off for me. As a bike mechanic for nearly 20 years, I've seen my share of destroyed road bike shifter/levers. Very rarely are they repairable, they are simply replaced. This is a road bike which seldom encounters a direct hit. When roadies go down, the shifters are usually bend, scrapped or broken. If you crash a lot on a road bike you are doing something wrong.
This feature just doesn't satisfy my logical portion of my brain where a crash on a mountain bike is something I encounter almost EVERY ride. If I don't crash, I'm not pushing hard enough.

Yeah, I guess so, or maybe a 3-speed system.
I guess retro isn't deserving until the technology is 15 years old. Maybe I'm more "old skool".
8-speed for me!

HAhaha...finally got a chance to play with a real 8 spd setup. Soooo smooth. Reminded me of my sram setup. (yes I have only been in the industry long enough to remember 9spd..I am really that new haha) I have played with a mishmash of 8 and 9 spd but never pure unadulterated 9...Might try to build my Roast as an 8

He's referring to the new XTR dual control lever as a "flippy shifter" because you just flip the brake lever up and down to shift up and down... the brake lever does double duty as both a brake lever and a shifter.

Me buying it myself or not has no bearing on if i think it works well... in fact, i dont know what the hell you are talking about. Wouldn't it be more snobish to say that the top of the line bike component sucked? I was saying the opposite.
I said you may have a brain tumor if you can't figure out how to work it. I meant it lightly. It seems you can say anything as long as you include a smiley, so next time i will say "maybe you have a brain tumor
"As for Mael, I respect his opinion, more so than most on this forum, but that doesn't mean he is the be-all-end-all anymore than myself.
AS a married man with four children, I find it pathetic and childish that you go call people snobs with whom you have no idea their situation, nor does it have any bearing on the discussion just as it had no bearing when the tennesse kid said it. It is unfair.
Also, shouldn't you be spelling it 'because' instead of 'cuz' at your age? I mean come on, I know 13 year old girls who spell it out. Maybe you are just slow. (not so nice is it)

agreed, let's keep it civil. We all have opinions. You (the proverbial you) have yours and I have mine.
Does that make 'ME' right? It does! To me!
Does that make 'YOU' right? Yes, it does! To you!
I still don't like flippy shifters and probably won't change until triggers go the way of thumb ****fers and I have no choice!

you know, i thought they kinda said the same thing with integrated headsets - that everyone's going to adopt it and the regular headsets would go the way of the dinosaur. at least that's what the Avanti sales rep tried to convince me.

Don't get me started with integrated headsets!
What is it with bike companies. Are they letting their marketing departments dictate their design.
I can understand the necessity or should I say desire for an integrated heaset on a road bike. You want to reduce weight and have a lower stack height.
What do those things have to do with a mountain bike. Heck, a headset is probably absorbing forces on a mountain bike from multiple angles simultaneously.
The strength and durability needed for a mountain bike does NOT lend itself to an integrated headset.
I could go on, but it's getting late!
Flippy shifters and integrated headsets AND more than 8 speeds have NO advantage on a mountain bike. I will add: Unless you are racing at a Professional level and have an indiscriminate amount of funding and essentially have disposable equipment at your beck and call.
