again, i don't really care where or how you ride your bike, i really really don't. the reason i'm upset, the reason it bothers me, is because these guys have input on what trails to build, and end up building boring trails. these guys act like they are something special because they race and have that stuck up roadie mentality, and are tainting the whole idea of mountain biking. these guys say they are mountain bikers, but refuse to try anything out of their comfort zone, and refuse to actually try "mountain biking."
they bother me because...they just don't get it, and it's sad. and frustrating.

either stay on the road, or learn a modicum of skills and at least *try* to ride a mountain bike like it was meant to be ridden, and dammit, have fun and enjoy it, stop trying to make every ride a time trial.
if you want to ride a super light hard tail on smooth surfaces, if you don't want to ride over any obstacles that might slow you down or require some skill, why are you riding a mountain bike?

I am a roadie as well. Only reason as i have mt biked for years and i totally suck. Singletrack is my weakness, i bump into a trees and fall over rocks. I prefer to ride on something smooth.
however I still mt bike on proper trails i have a hard tail and ride technical stuff, even though i am so slow at it, nothing i can do, even 8 year olds pass me. lol
i tried my best to get more technical but its just coordination
so for road riding, i am more about physical aspect and i love pumping miles and miles at a hard intense pace. which i can on the road
for mt bike trails , i have a hard getting my heart rate up but i still ride the hard stuff, as it is still fun, i just suck.
i more less call myself all around cyclist as i do both road and mt bike. Is that wrong?

No way is that wrong. In fact it's the only way to be, as far as I'm concerned. It's nice to do both to keep things interesting, besides the road here is full of high speed idiots in 3500 lb weapons and the paths here are a combination of new and smooth and old and unpredictably disasterous with multiple pedestrian obstacles, so you've got to be an all around cyclist.

the reason i ride is simple.
PASSION..it's the only passion i love.riding bike it is,be it MTB,road bike,all-mountain,26er,29er..etc..yada,yada,blah--blah.
i don't care what you are,who you are. we sharing ideas and thought in this forum,we share our same passion.we share everything in aspect of biking either pros or cons.
since i don't have car (it's my choice not to own a car)
bike is the only vehicles i own ( alto,i work as truck driver here in NJ making deliveries into NYC)
so,everywhere i go..i use my bikes.
i race..short and endurance races.i love doing long distance ride on my road bike or mountain bike.i recently did this rides https://connect.garmin.com/activity/108519918 (and you can check out all my garmin files, you'll see what i'm talking about)
so,..do we really have to put label on our forehead?i don't think so.
we are all cyclist, ladies and gentleman!
i certaintly partly agree with OP here...i feel your feeling dude.
it's the attitude that sometimes make certain people uncomfortable.i totally can understand it.people behave/personality is full of mystery.so,.that's too interpreted in the way they/we behave when we were doing sport activites with others people/group/friends/foes..etc.it's different story when we were riding alone.the word is...we must have tolerance..understanding/respectfull with each other..and be reasonable.
this i don't mean to be a wise guy.i'm not wise,just a reasonable cyclist.

Too much talk & complaining here.
If you want to show them how little you care about their gear, just drop them all on the climbs and the technical descents on your 35lbs mtn bike with a rear rack. Will shut everyone up quick about how 'awesome' their bike is and how awesome a rider they are.

As I read through this thread I tried to come on board and understand the intent to the original posters message and tried to assess it as a rant against snobs who buy the best stuff and boast they are mountain bikers for status and not for the love of the sport...basically something like "A Dr/ Engineer on a $6000 epic riding riding the easiest trails telling everyone they just finished a 3 hour grueling mountain bike ride and asking everyone what they ride and if they rode that day"....hope that is it, if not I kinda see the post as one looking down on others for not riding to acceptable levels of riding that they set.
Couple things I would like to note. Those that classify themselves as purist and criticize those that go out and get the new expensive bikes cuz they have ridden the same hard tail or bike for the last 15 years and doing fine...these are the people keeping your local bike shops alive so they can give you deals on those little parts you periodically have to replace on that bike of yours. They are also pumping money into a growing industry that is actively lobbying for trails and laws in support of better mountainbikeing as well as pushing innovation in research and design.
The type of trails a person rides is a person choice and should be based on their preferences and ability...not the bike they ride. Couple of points here. Friend started mountain biking after road biking for year. Was given...yes given...a nice full suspension mountain bike to pursue new interest. Went riding with friends that pointed out they were real mountain bikers and with that bike you don't take the easy trails....you hit real mountain bike stuff....gave pointers on how to maintain speed through the technical stuff and pick the right line...the person is no longer riding as they are recovering from broken arm, dislocated shoulder and facial lacerations from a crash on there second ride out. My son rides technical and does well. Daughter not as brave but loves climbing and single track...avoids real rough stuff. Son rides his stumpy, which is a good bike though older...daughter just bought new fancy GF 29er hard tail. Son doesn't appreciate the sport tho does have some talent...only goes periodically to show he can outride everyone...daughter loves it and though doesn't ride the roughest trails always goes when she has a chance even though she is always last coming in and we have to wait...boy is always first and let's here know it...I enjoy riding with the daughter so much.
My point being hopefully you don't classify people by the bike or trail they ride. People ride different bikes and trails for different reasons. There are people that are bike snobs....yes annoying as all get out...I personally do not like the ones when you pull up to them they ask you the type of bike you have before saying hi even....hahahaha...funny....but well worth avoiding and you shouldn't let them get to you. I have meet 10 times more kewl people on the bike trail then snobs. I believe I understand were the OP is going here...but the way it is worded can be misinterpreted as being sort of a snob as well and hence some of the feedback provided

A couple of points. Take any group of people and a percentage will be jerks. Take a group of cyclists revved up on energy bars & adrenaline *& the percentage skyrockets. Does the op not think he is being as judgmental as the folks he is criticizing?*Just chill...

I'm new around here ..... is this thread at all typical of what goes on in this fair forum?
I don't care a **** why others ride on dirt and I don't get why some others are so hot and bothered about it. But it's an entertaining thread to read, I'll say that for it.
happy trails ....
Later: I think that poster is right, it must be the heat.

hmmm, so it isn't so different from other forums I waste time on ......
That's OK, lots of good posts from experienced and sensible riders of all sorts on this forum. There's room in the big wide world of unengined 2-wheelers for all.
Why am I reminded of the first (and last) time I tried surfing, which was at Santa Monica as it happens [rhet.]. I'd never seen so many attitudes in such a short period of time before. Very droll.
The main thing is not to cramp anyone else's style, which I suppose can be a challenge in certain crowded situations. I'll try not to do that myself - best done by staying away from the crowd.

^^^, oh no, FIRST, he supports UMD! Second his picture has them curved handlebars. What are those called, DROPS?
Yeah, Pablo SNAZ gets off his meds from time to time, but he is the old school trail rider and captures the free spirit of early Mountain Biking where the bike is the tool and not the ring on your finger.
Santa Monica eh, I know you got a few good trails there! Why ride skinny tires in that neighborhood.

I really fail to understand why it is the OP's business how people ride their bikes.
I live in the mountains, and I travel in the mountains. I ride an MTB because I like to explore my world.
I like to ride up the logging roads, and forest service roads and see where they go. I like to wander off the logging roads onto trails or paths and see where they go. Sometimes they go up, sometimes they go down. Sometimes there are rocks and sometimes it's just dirt and gravel.
I like getting to see the world that hardly ever gets seen.
I am 56, I have no desire to fall and break something and lose my earnings, and those of my staff because I was trying to satisfy the OP.
I have no interest in putting my bike in the car and driving to somewhere just to ride down a "single track" trail.
I love taking the bike up into the mountains to a new forest service road I found in the maps and trying to get to the lake thati know is out there.
OP should grow up.

i bet with a little bit of basic reading comprehension, you would realize the rant doesn't apply to you. i fail to understand why someone would take umbrage with something that isn't directed towards them.

That's OK pablo, you've inspired a number of posters to eloquently explain why they ride MTB and why they don't care a fig what you think. You have done us all a favor. Well, me anyway.
Wapiti: I like the desert and mountains round here (San Diego county) don't get me wrong, but I envy you your lifestyle. In my genes I'm a Mountain Man, riding across a steep, rocky landscape, scaring the occassional horse or mountain lion and sleeping in caves.
Many of my relatives (most RIP at this stage) lived in Colorado Springs. None of them slept in caves, in fact they hardly ever got out of town, but that isn't the point .....
Cheers, Charles.
p.s. I've decided I'm gonna stick around in this forum. I like the mixture of sage advice and great entertainment. I think I understand the point of the OP. There are snobs in all areas of life. That's OK, if they get off on ridiculously overspending on a MTB for their needs/purpose I don't mind - it doesn't affect me. Also it's good for the economy - these people spend far more money than they should and thus spread the wealth around voluntarily. Beats a higher tax rate for all.
