2003 Trek Fuel Frame Value/Worth

Hello,

I am currently riding a Walmart mongoose bike that has been completely upgraded except the frame. I was originally planning on repainting the frame this winter, but decided that I am going to just buy a new frame and move all my new components over. What I am wondering, is how much you guys think this frame is actually worth and if you think I should try getting it. I was originally wanting to get a hard tail, but at the price this is currently at I figured it would be well worth it. Also, I was wondering how long the seals in the Fox Float shocks last because if I would have to replace the shock I will just get a different hard tail frame.

If I don't get this Trek frame or find a good frame on ebay before next spring, I am planning on just getting this frame

Bikes: Bike list is not a resume. Nobody cares.

One the Fuel frame, I would say as long as it doesn't go above $250 shipped (maybe $300 max) it would stay a good deal. Used shock is always a pig-in-a-poke thing, especially the Floats; but they can be rebuilt reasonably; so take that into consideration in how much you set your max bid at. You might ask the seller whether the shock has ever been serviced, if it has any leak-down, etc.

Yeah, after noticing the shipping cost being $50, it is already up to $130 and I bet it will go up, so I have decided to just go with the jamis frame. I always had cheap walmart dual suspension frames and like the idea of having a hardtail. Do you have any experience or knowlegde of the jamis Komodo frames?

I don't but ed has a pretty fair bit of experience with them. When he gets a long enough break today to check in, hopefully he'll chime in and share his knowledge.

^ '09 Komodo I, stock except for fork, front wheel, headset, stem, pedals, and grips. It looks ridiculous with that tiny little rotor up front, I know.

Fun bike. Climbs like a pig, but descends great for a hardtail. Nice stout bike...most people won't be able to break it, and the ones who will break it know it and aren't asking this question. Ed trashes his and he always talks about how it can handle his abuse. Will be a million times better than your Walmart Mongoose.

Why just the frame though? Unless you're looking to handpick all your own parts and put it together yourself (which does have its benefits), you'll save a lot of money buying the complete.
Complete 2.0 is $575: https://jensonusa.com/store/product/B...0+08+Bike.aspx
Complete 1.0 is only $349 but the fork is a POS (which is why mine no longer has that fork on it): https://jensonusa.com/store/product/B...0+08+Bike.aspx

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed that you already have components. See how much stuff fits. I can't remember how much money I spent upgrading that fork because I didn't realize there was a reducer headset in there, but it wasn't as cheap an upgrade as I thought it was going to be (thought it was just going to be fork and front wheel).

I didn't realize that I could get a complete bike for $350, the 2011 model showed retailing at $725. The main reason I was wanting just a frame (as you notice) is that I already have a complete Shimano Alivio drivetrain, and a SunRingle Wheelset on my mongoose, and those upgrades have made my mongoose 1000X more fun to ride. My original plan was to just slowly upgrade my mongoose as parts broke until I got to the point where all I had left to do was upgrade the frame. However, with how cheap it is to just get a complete bike, I think I'll just save up and get the Komodo 1.0...........n+1 strikes again........

EDIT: I am still keeping my eye out on the Trek Fuel that I originally posted though, I still might end up getting it if it stays at its current price, and if that happens, I obviously won't be getting the Komodo...... immediately lol I will still want a hard tail in the future.

I have no interest in ever getting or riding a 29er. If I want to ride a "29er" I'll get out my SS roadie.

Also, thanks for point out that "anything is better than a walmart bike". I already knew that, I just don't have the money to go spend on a whole new bike, that is why I have been upgrading my bikes cheaper parts with the intent of getting a frame in the future, and that future is slowly approaching, which is why I started this thread.

Let's hear it for gradually-upgraded box-store bikes

What type of bike is that? It looks like one of my older mongoose walmart bikes that I had back when I was like 12. Also, after thinking about it pretty much all day, think that before I go jump into deciding to buy a whole new bike I think I'll just wait and see how my bike handles the trails this weekend, because the trail I'm planning on doing is the hardest trail in my local area, so if it can stand up to it and survive, it should be able to survive pretty much anything else I throw at it........ or at least for a little bit. Like I said, the only thing original (that takes a lot of stress) is the fork and frame.

It was a Mongoose MGX D50i that I bought at Costco. When I retired it, it still had the original single-wall front rim, cranks/BB and loose-ball headset. It is now on-deck to become my ski-bike, provided I finally finish it this fall.

That's awesome cause my first ever mountain bike a a mongoose mgx. It wasn't the d50i, it was a cheaper model, but that's still pretty cool.
