I always at least always wave, but rarely stop because I don't carry tools and the tubes I have won't work in mtb bikes. (Do mtb riders not normally carry spare tubes?)

No offense is intended but I'm always amazed by those who don't ride with tools and tubes... would you mind enlightening me to your reasoning?

Twice within the past couple of weeks...first time, I passed a "kid" who was walking somewhere, (he was coming toward me, not with me), pushing his bike. He obviously had a front flat tire. Second incident was passing a bike on the ground with its rider hunched over it. A quick glance showed that it was obviously not a road bike. There was nothing I could do. He wasn't hurt and never looked up at me as I passed.

I pass mtb bikers all the time, (on the streets). Even though I rarely say, "on your left", (or "a su izquierda" in my neck of the woods), I always give a friendly wave as I pass . . . and always passing at an appropriate and respectable distance. Even though I don't carry any tools, and have never had need of them, I do carry two tubes, a patch kit, and the necessary tire irons to change flats. (I have been on the lookout for a multi-tool, but have not yet found the exact combination that I want.) On double-metric centuries, I'll carry three spare tubes, but I only do one or two of those a year.

MTBer here. I have tubeless and I actually pay attention to how much sealant is liquid in my tires, refilling as needed. I don't take spares when I ride this bike on the bike path, because it would take a roofing nail or large piece of glass to cause a flat. I also don't take spares if I'm riding offroad on relatively short trails because if I can walk the bike out in 20 minutes, it's better than standing in the tall grass beside the trail with the ticks trying to put in a tube.

However, if I'm going long distances then yes, absolutely, I bring a spare tube. I also have a multi-tool, pump, tire boot and a small first aid kit. If you're wearing a hydration pack anyway, it doesn't hurt much to bring that stuff.

Different guy, but I often go on completely unencumbered rides, just bring some singles for bus fare and stay on the bus/train lines.

Then there are long rides out in the country where I bring a couple of spare tubes AND a spare tire.

Lester and Volo, I understand liking to ride without stuff but I'm from the saddle bag camp and it's amazing how many tubes/tools/spare parts you can fit in there and be your own SAG but different methods for different folks.

I started out on MTBs and only went on the roadie for training. Thne met some really great road groups. Now I don't clain to be a roadie or a mountain biker, I ride what I want, when I want, where I want. More fun that way.
