Putnam - Mahopac Path

I'm finally using Motion-based!

here's the first, short ride link - a nice, gradual climb.

Here's the player

Oh, that's cool - I was actually just about to post a question about the Putnam Trailway/North County Trailway/South County Trailway.

I recently wanted to ride south from Putnam back down to NYC, but once I got down to the bridge by Tarrytown where it crosses Taconic, the signage just fizzled out on me. I was faced with a path East and a path West. I took the path East, but chose wrong and it dumped me on the Tarrytown Reservoir, at which point I gave up.

Looking at the map here https://www.westchestergov.com/Parks/...ys/SCTrail.pdf , it seems it should have gone West i.e. South... too bad the signage fizzled out and it wasn't signposted. Probably there's a lot of residents/day trippers that don't realize that the network is so extensive.

Don't get me wrong, though, it's a great resource!

Can you see the map? I'm curious. We'll keep posting our Motion-Based routes so we can better map this popular path...

Don't forget to DL the Adobe SVG. FYI I used a Garmin Handheld that was in my backpack all the time and not on the bike!

That is pretty cool!

Our family did the Northern section of the trail (Carmel to Mahopac) twice earlier in the month. Very nice ride. In many ways I think it is more challenging and interesting than the Harlem Valley RT.

I cannot wait until they finish laying water pipe and start paving over the old Maybrook line in Dutchess. It was supposed to begin this past Spring, but now the signs they put us say Spring 2008 (as does the web site).

There is renewed talk about fixing the 120 year old bridge over the Hudson. Imagine being able to ride from Hopewell Junct, over the river, and on towards New Paltz!

Some day......

Bump for Air and Matty, if we do the ride Sunday, this is one half, 6 mi each way. The whole ride is 12 mi each way. We have to start at the bottom so the "big" gradual hill is first and then you get to chute down at the end (return) topping out at about 30mph; 35-40 if there's noone on the path...

Here's the whole trailway:

Looks like I can't make it Sunday, will have to take apart a floor for a friend's party. It sounds like a great ride, let me know when you'll do it again!!

The North County Trail has a older spur that heads past the Tarrytown Rez. WEST, from where the trail meets Saw Mill Rd/Nepperhan Rd. (as described on Google Maps) at the point where the NC Trail crosses the Saw Mill Parkway on the old train bridge overpass.

The NC Trail then continues south to Warehouse Lane in Elmsford, which is the southern terminus.

To hookup with the South County Trail, you detour 1/4 mile east on Warehouse over to 9A and head south (right) 3/4 mile to Tarrytown Rd/Rt 119.

The northern terminus of the South County Trail starts just alongside a parking lot, about half way between the intersection of Rt's 9A and 119 and the SM Parkway overpass.

Sunday is out for me also. I am in Duchess County for the weekend, and did not bring the bike. Have fun Steve. We should all hook up again during the week. I wanna keep up my momentum (hope it wasn't a fluke)

Trust me it wasn't!!! I was faster than the first time we rode and you nearly caught me on the stretch. If I can't push a Ti bike past you guys than there's something wrong with me!!! Keep up the great work...

I just drove by the railbed on 376 in Hopewell Junction, and sure enough, there is a new sign there announcing the "Future Home of the Dutchess Rail Trail". This will be so cool.

The signs are like a giant tease! Heard on the news last Thursday that the matching fed grant had been received, and the project is now going out for competitive bid.

Aah, yeah - that's where I got confused and bailed out to Tarrytown. Thanks for the detour info!
