those maps are almost never drawn to scale. It's really very small - but densely packed with people and stuff, of course.

Are there any steep descents in the Hershey area, or are they more gradual? I'm most familiar with the stretch along Rt. 322.
I need all the help I can get on the descents. And I'm not about to gain a few pounds to get it.

There's not much of any length right around Hershey - short and steep, mostly.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

I'm touring in northern NJ, NYC, and the Jersey shore that weekend. PM me if you want to come along for some of it.

i'll be staying in Tappan from wednesday through sunday. depending on how things go, i could possibly be up to that area early wednesday afternoon.

i'm still working out the details for what i'm doing on monday & tuesday.....i'm thinking the MD area and hooking up with WJ13US in the baltimore area monday, assuming he can take some time off from work (or some other MD peeps). if not, then i'll get some route ideas from him or others and just ride on my own.

most likely will finish up whatever riding i'm going to do there and then head on up to the harrisburg area later monday afternoon/evening. spend the night in harrisburg area, do some riding the next day - maybe a metric and then possibly spending another night in that area.

wednesday - (assuming i stay in PA tues night) head out towards ny...mapquest says about 200mi from harrisburg to tappan, about 3hrs. so, after typing all of this out, looks like i could be up that way by lunch time or shortly there after.

it's coming together.

I know you're planning to get to Baltimore, MD, but if you want to ride in NoVA on your way up, then I would be around and could also offer a place to crash on your way up north.

Keep in touch...I'll be around. May have to do some re-arranging of work schedule to get out on the road that Tuesday, but will happily do so. Again, if the weather is crappy, I can hook you up with some gym passes

ok...i have tues/wed (11/25 & 26) off the week of thanksgiving. i'll be getting up fairly early tues morning to drive up there...

mapquest says it's ~390mi/6hr up to harrisburg. i figure i could probably get there in 5.5hr, but not sure. so, can we get a metric +/- in if i get up there, say, between 11am-12pm? if the weather is sucky, then i'll have to go to plan b, whatever that is.

after the ride, i'll probably just get a motel since the falling gas prices have offset that cost - it's just one night anyways.

I think I might be feeling a bit unwell next Tuesday, and may need to take off early to recuperate. (used up all my vaca days). If Beth wants to take charge of the ride details, that's fine. If not, I'll arrange something suitable on the West Shore.

Jeez. Sorry to hear about your upcoming illness. I believe it's highly contagious.

We do our vacation days by fiscal year and project schedules have made me lose 3 days from Fiscal 2008. I'm 90% certain to be there. But I have little control over work right now.

Who else is in?

Who's in charge of this? We'll be wanting to know meeting location and time and whatnot pretty soon.

I nominate wolfpack to be in charge.

wp: In your job research, what were you finding in regards to civil engineering firms in the area? I know you're interested in the commuting opportunities and we should probably ride in that general area. And by general area, I mean east shore (Hershey/Hummestown) or west shore (Mechanicsburg/Carlisle) general areas. Commuting from east shore to west shore (or visa-versa) is problematic by car and worse by bike.

For east shore opportunities, we could ride from Hershey to Memorial Lake or to Mount Gretna. Maybe take in some sights in Hershey. Whatever wp wants to do.

I don't think there would be time for a full Metric, but I don't feel very strongly about what area/distance/terrain we choose. It's not going to be a training ride, just an adventure.
