Injury is always a possibility in our sport but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with. A speedy recovery and my wishes for extra strength to the family while Daniel is mending.

May you recover quickly and completely. Do take your time. Head injuries can take a long time to heal completely. I'm sure your Doc's are telling you the same thing. Just get well, man.

Hey Dan, you'll be back on the bike soon enough. Until then, heal up nice n slow and give your body time to do what it needs to do. Hey.. TDF is coming up and think of all the coverage you'll get to see!! Seriously, heal up well and we'll see ya out there. Best wishes.

I don't know Dan, but have seen him the mountain many times. I know he is a dedicated rider and a good friend to many local cyclists. I am sorry to hear of the crash, and hope for a fast recovery. All the best Dan!

On Wednesday, some time after Diablo Scott shot this photo of LanceOldStrong (Dan) at the Diablo Junction, Dan had a bad crash while descending the mountain.
He was found by another cyclist (we don't know who, but would like to know) who directed emergency personnel to the scene.
Dan has a serious head injury and was taken to emergency room.
As of today (Saturday, June 23) he is conscious, talking a bit, and even able to walk and has been moved out of ICU. That said, he is still in the hospital. The side of his face is badly swollen and he's still very much suffering the effects of his head injury. In addition, he has a lot road rash, but no broken bones.
LanceOldStrong doesn't remember the crash, so we aren't sure what happened.
He's pretty beat up, so his wife is asking for no visitors, but I know he'll be on BF reading this thread when he get's home (as soon as he finishes analyzing his Garmin data is my guess.)
Despite the seriousness of this post, in the spirit of BikeForums "But how's the bike?" mentality, I will report that his bike is only minimally damaged, a bit beat up around the left shifter.

Lance Oldstrong is home as of 6:45 eating leftover pizza for dinner and loving it. His recovery will continue at home. All calls and visitors should be screened through his wife Julie.

So we still don't know where this happened?
At the Junction, he told me his ride plan was:
Up NGR (done), down SGR at least part way; then turn around and come back up SGR and then down NGR to home.
So he could've crashed on the descent of either SGR or NGR. I haven't seen any dangerous conditions on either side recently but I'd like to look.
Also, maybe... I could name a new road landmark after him

Thank God for thick skulls and good helmets. Thank God for Good Samaritans. Thank God for good medical care. Thank God all these things added up to us talking about wishing LanceOldstrong a speedy and complete recovery and not about something a lot worse.
And thank God for strategically placed holes in one's memory.
Dan: Get healthy. When you are ready to get back on your bike - make that when your doctor and Julie say you are ready to get back on your bike - I will be delighted to join you and help get you back to being able to ride circles around me without having to try.
Julie: If you guys need anything, let me know. Dan has my phone number and e-mail address.

Dan: Just to be safe, please get your frame checked by a pro who knows what to look for. It's way too easy for any frame of any material to get small cracks that are not obvious in a serious crash (I know this from hard-earned personal experience - a frame died with a really big crack in the bottom bracket - the only reasonable explanation for it is that it started as a very small crack in crash two or three years earlier). You do not want to ride a CF frame that has even a little bit of damage to the fibers. I know we kid you all the time about CF spontaneously combusting, and it is all in fun, but it is true that when CF fails, it fails "right now" and catastrophically. Let's not have this crash sowing the seeds of another one down the road.

I checked in today with Dan. He's supposed to stay very quiet and have no stimulation. I begged Julie to let me see him and she gave me exactly 1 minute. Dan said the hospital treated him really well and he's really happy to out of there, then it was time for me to leave.
He's clearly has a long road to recovery before him, but knowing how hard he's worked to attain his cycling goals I know he'll reach his latest as well.
I just keep esp-ing good vibes his direction and take comfort in knowing he has Julie taking care of him.

Dan, glad to hear you're on the mend. Take your time, the bike will wait. I'll miss you on the double circuit, but that will wait too. Praying for a full and speedy recovery.

Dan heal up, but take your time doing so. So sorry this happened. You've come so far since that crazy frozen Davis "unpopulaire" back in January 2007, and I know you'll be back out there soon - but please be patient and let yourself heal.
