Yes, you do not want any taffeta when interviewing. Unless you are Chipcom, then it is an advantage.

What about if you're a guy interviewing for a blue collar job that involves travel and client contact where a uniform of some kind is provided. Would you laugh if the interviewee showed up in shirt/tie/dress pants?

No. I think that's the absolute minimum for any interview, I would wear that if I was going to try to get a job at McDonald's.

I wouldn't, or at least it wouldn't have a negative impact.

Then again, I'm not said guy.

now look here. I already made a concession with the use of the term "SUV" rather than "4 by 4". It will be a cold day in hell when yummy mummies become mommies.

interviews require the interview uniform. what you wear is not a preview of the work attire, but just the interview formality.

You had one dust up with a vehicle, and it so rattled you that you canceled your entire ride?

Ok. Thanks. That's what I thought.

The interview already happened, and the interviewer gave him a hard time about looking nice, and at one point stressed that he'd have to get dirty. (WTF! He's currently a machinist, just because he cleans up well doesn't mean he's a pretty-boy who sits in a cafe sipping espresso with his pinkie up all day.) The interview otherwise went well, very qualified for the job, they talked for 2 hours, gave him a bunch of numbers of employees to call to learn more about the company and said he'd be emailing him the employee handbook. He hasn't gotten it yet, and he's getting a vibe like the guy is stalling. Interview was 2 weeks ago.

Anyway. He's all worried now that overdressing cost him the job, because that was the only negative. I think that would be really weird.

no. there is a strike by underground workers so the roads are all choked up. 3 pm and it was bumper to bumper within 5 mins of the ride. very unpleasant. the near death experience was the last straw.

Those ranges are arbitrary, they don't really mean anything.

don't sweat it. companies are all on edge these days. sounds like they liked him but they don't know if hiring someone is the right thing to do so they are waiting and seeing. nothing he could have done to avoid that. tell him to go out and ride his bike.
