Is it normal to need permission from your significant other to go riding? I understand that one has to maintain a balance and it's a problem if you are spending huge amounts of free time cycling. But really. . . permission to go on a ride?

I thought so. Sorry for my poor spelling.

I just ate my lunch...one "Smart Dog" which I suspect is slightly more healthy than your KK doughnuts.

In my case...for wednesday rides no, since she is at work and kids are at school.

Yes for weekend rides when she and kids are around.

I am not sure if my situation is "normal" however.

I have three nice ones. I bought them at tag sales for cheap and refurbished them. I could sell them for 10x what I paid for them easy.

Obviously if you've got younger kids you must coordinate schedules for child care. But I thought yours are older.

What's a typical reason your permission is not granted?

My kids are 9 and 10. The reasons are complicated, but it boils down to the fact that if I go out for a ride on the weekend that is seen as not contributing to household duties. It's a bit of a double standard, as my wife is addicted to korean dramas which she watches online and may spend 3 hours on a saturday watching them....but she is home and keeping an eye on the kids....whereas if I go out for 3 hours for a ride I am not present...the difference is subtle to me but a huge issue for her. Unless there are tons of household chores to be done she generally does not mind if I do one ride on Saturday. I recently changed Saturday rides from 9AM to noon, for two reasons...one is that it's colder in the a.m. and slightly warmer in the early afternoon....secondly, it allows me to help with laundry, cleaning, and other domestic duties BEFORE the ride. That has helped a bit as well.

a new one? depending on the size, anywhere from around 100$ and up.

used ones, if you can find a decent one can be both cheaper and sometimes better.

avoid anything you can buy at a HD, Lowes, hardware store.

It depends.

We've already established that I'm not the boss of Mr. TS, so he does pretty much what he likes.
It's somewhat the same for me, for the most part, although my time is more limited because household duties are a bit lopsided.

It helps that we don't have kids.

it depends upon what you describe as "permission". It is important to be respectful of your SO's time and energy as well as your own. I was accused of riding too much 18 months ago. So I stopped entirely for 2 weeks. She then told me "get on your bike, you are being an *******" (she is usually right). Now we just discuss our plans at the start of each day, and plan the weekend on Friday evening. No worries anymore.

I don't see the big deal with permission. If you're going out for a long 60 or 100 mile ride I understand the time consumption, but if there is a conflict of interest it seems unreasonable to be upset over a quick 45-60 minute ride
