Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

Bikes: Catrike Trail Recumbent trike

Is this a good deal?

I've been thinking about getting a recumbent sometime in the future. I currently own a road bicycle that i converted into a hybrid/commuter. I was just searching around the other day and found this. I would need something that will be decent at climbing hills and dealing with some not so great roads. What are your thoughts on this one? Would it be worth it and be a good starter?

It's a ReBike! That is a very heavy bike. More of a cross between a crank forward and a recumbent. Someone else here might have experience with ReBikes.

I think a ReBike would be a great bike for an older person to pedal around a completely flat trailer park or campground in Florida. It'd probably be relatively good on less-than-perfect roads, but it would climb about like a mountain bike pulling a 30-pound kid in a bugger.

Thanks for the feedback. That one will be out of the question.

What about these recumbents?

I found a Vision 21 speed that i would be interested in: https://albany.craigslist.org/bik/1715285351.html.
I also found a Rans Tailwind that looks cool: https://nh.craigslist.org/bik/1703615113.html.

I rode a 2000 Tailwind for 2 years as my introduction to recumbentry. Nice bikes. I was a bit tall for it at 6'1", 45" x-seam. The picture looks like a 2000 or earlier model with 1.5" diameter main/top tube. Newer models have a 2" tube and have a bit less "built-in suspension".
Dual 20" wheels are light and rugged and get up to speed fast but somewhat more difficulty at maintaining speed on less-than-smooth surfaces.
That bike should weigh around 30 pounds. It will accomodate 20x1.5" tires or a bit larger, to help it roll better on rougher stuff.

It might be out of your ballpark price range for an entry level bike, but I recently put my Longbikes Slipstream up for sale. Its a very comfortable ride and handles exceptionally well on rougher roads - rail-trails, dirt roads and the like. Its not particularly light, so not a fast climber but very stable both at slow speeds and high speed descents. If you get down to eastern CT at all, you're welcome to give it a test ride. Details and pix over at 'bentrideronline.com

What Janmm said about the Tailwind. I think by the time RANS discontinued them, the price was up to $1299 (new.) It's a versatile starter 'bent, not a fire-breather but well-rounded and probably a fair climber. I can't tell anything about the Vision. Vision made a whole line-up, from an R-32 that was dual-20 and used a Sachs 3x7 rear hub to get the equivalent gearing as a triple chainring, to a larger line of bikes that were convertible between SWB and LWB, to one of the first highracers. You probably wouldn't be interested in the R32 or the highracer (skinny tires,) but if it's one of the convertibles it might be worth a look.

The first one you listed shows a weight of 47 pounds without adding any accessories. If you are looking for something that is reasonably fast and climbs hills, this probably isn't it. That's way more weight than my old Linear LWB and it only cost me $500 (used) a decade ago. It takes a lot of looking and a little patience but you can find decent recumbents well under $1K.

Yes very heavy. You can get much lighter recumbent bikes for a reasonable price. Buy Buy Bicycles stocks a variety and they ship world wide... The Adventure Plus 2-wheel recumbent bicycle is a steal at about $1150. It has a really light cr-moly frame and high spec SRAM and Shimano components. For cheap, new recumbents, there are several distributors in the U.S., including Actionbent.com and RecumbentUSA.com. I'm sure there are others, but I can't come up with other names at this point. These distributors, like the apparently-British one pushed by warrior76, sell bents from China Mascot and its spin-offs. They're 'OK' bents, but buying through them loses you any sort of dealer support you'd have from a LBS. I know that Randy at Actionbent, at least, sells the same bikes on Fleabay, and usually at below-list prices.

Most bents come in 2-3 frame sizes, so you need to understand what frame size you need first and then the range of adjustment
on the bent you are looking at. www.hostelshoppe.com has a fitting guide somewhere on the site. None of the bikes you posted
had frame sizes listed.

Actually China Mascot / TW Bents have full support in the UK with spare parts and 2 yrs warranty on the frames... they are actually really good bikes for the price compared to other UK recumbents available.
