I really can't see how you could be sitting on the fence for this. This guy didn't do anything to anybody. He bought a car, and someone decided that they'd be the righteous ones and go and vandalize it?

What the ****? Maybe I should come demolish your house because its not as environmentally friendly as mine. Do your parents/friends drive a car? Maybe we should smash those too, they aren't environmentally friendly either.

This is no more than environmental zealots and anarchism at its best. I

Do you beleive in right and wrong? I do, but also beleive in grey areas and very few absolute truths...

• My girlfriend drives a compact car because it's not feasable for her to do what she needs to do without a car.

• Some guy drives a huge, excessive, gas guzzling monster because he "likes it" and doesn't give a **** about who has to pay the price.

The two are not one in the same.

I don't think that "no one should drive" because that's not realistic but I do think that people should drive responsibly and given that there are direct consequences of other people's irresponsibility for everyone else (especially for those who are dying for that scumbag's excess) then I don't really have a problem with someone else putting them in check. Sorry, I just don't.

:D

just got back from my 2007 distance "goal" ride!

i had never kept track of far i rode in a year, so this january i started a bike journal.

i thought 3,000kms would be a conservative guess, since i have a pretty short commute. and it's only july. it makes me wonder how far i've ridden in the past few years altogether.

and it was an interesting day to do it: heading east into the fog, the passing downpour, to strong sunshine in the west. yay

shapelike 07-19-07 04:49 PM

Nicely done, sir.

I am pretty anti-car (even though I own one) but I would never vandalize anyone's car, even if they did park in a bike lane. They are being a-holes but why would I stoop to their level?

The only time I feel I might be justified in touching your wheels is when you come close to killin' me with it.

Yep. You might disagree with their choices, but chances are they feel the same way about people ****ing with their cars as you would about someone ****ing with your bike.

Congrats zippered! That's rad! Very satisfying.

Now to the business at hand. Let me apologize to everyone who may be annoyed by this heated debate. I hope you realize it was not my intention, I simply found it funny and figured some may watch and chuckle and those who didn't would ignore. But clearly I've offended someones delicate sensibilities. I kid, I kid. :D

I too can understand both sides. Op, i 100% see your point. I just don't agree with you. Do you I know anyone who owns a Hummer? I know a few. Some of them I would even call friends. But when they drive that, I call them a ******. And most of the time, the know why and quietly understand. Because they don't care. Have I ever been in a hummer? Yes. And I felt like a ****** every second but still tried to absorb what it was that was so appealing about it. I can't, because I'm not the type of person it was made for. Have I ever given a Hummer? Not that I can recall. And I'm sticking with that. ;)

But I digress.

If you look at my Flickr account you will actually see my pics from the car show. And I do have my licence - and have been driving since I was about 14. I actually like cars. I just don't like what they do to the world. Not just the environment, but the world. Now I enjoy the design, appreciate the engineering and have a Zipcard.

I also don't believe that anything is cut and dry, black and white. With context things can appear very grey. For instance, this guy could live at home because he's taking care of his mother who is ill. Do I know he's not? No. But I don't care. If that's the case, he should be spending/saving that money to take care of her instead of buying the single most recognizable symbol of excess of our generation. On every level.

I didn't say anyone should smash cars. Sure, if a car touches me I feel free to strip the effing thing to blocks and throw the driver a quarter. You put my life in danger simply for your convenience, you've got it coming. I've been hit by enough cars in my twenty plus years of riding who've then gave me the finger or yelled at me to not have too much sympathy.

So he has to have his insurance pay to fix his car which he'll have back on the road in a couple of weeks tops. I'll pray for him from my rehab sessions while I try to learn to walk again. You buy a stupid vehicle that causes damage at every stage of it's existence, I'm gonna laugh and point. And I do. Someone gives you a hassle for it, good. Hey man, sorry about your luck but **** happens. And karma works both ways.

I'd also like to point out, I didn't trash a car. I posted a link in the interslice. And I'll do it again. :D

Ps. - I beat up a puppy with a baby on the way home. I'll post pics later to keep it interesting in here ;)

Believe it or not, I watched Pulp Fiction last night for the first time in ages. The following conversation always has been true to me, ever since I saw it on opening night in 1994:

Lance: Still got your Malibu?
Vincent: Aw, man. You know what some ****er did the other day?
Lance: What?
Vincent: ****ing keyed it.
Lance: Oh, man, that's ****ed up.
Vincent: Tell me about it. I had it in storage for three years, it was out for five days and some dickless piece of **** ****ed with it.
Lance: They should be ****ing killed. No trial, no jury, straight to execution.
Vincent: Boy, I wish I could've caught him doing it. I'd have given anything to catch that ******* doing it. It'd been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him doing it.
Lance: What a ****er!
Vincent: What's more chicken**** than ****ing with a man's automobile? I mean, don't **** with another man's vehicle.
Lance: You don't do it.
Vincent: It's just against the rules.

I don't really have a point, I realize I'm probably preaching to the choir here and I'm tempted to delete this but whatever, here's my rant:

Yeah I used to like cars too, so much that I went to school and got a job designing them for 10 years. Hell, I've designed lots of parts on the hummer. You know what? The auto industry stinks. They're doing the same thing now as they were in the 60's which is make it bigger and have more horsepower The difference now is you get a nice cupholder and LCD screen on the dash instead of a chrome bumper (chromium's bad for the environment, don't you know). We're pretty much at the same stage now as we were in height of the muscle car era in the late 60's and the early 70's just as the oil crisis hit. This time it's the environment. Either way, the pattern repeats.

Production of the new cars is primarily done in developing markets like China and mexico now 'cause the labour is cheap and the worker safety is not important (i.e. regulated) Well paying union jobs are going to dry up in North America and leave thousands without jobs. This is just the start. China is now where North America was back in the day when Henry ford had the great idea that if the workers could afford the cars they made, then he could sell that many more- this is where china is now and people are getting off their bikes and into their cars. It's going to get worse before it gets better. I just can't decide if we'll die from destroying the earth, or a US-China "world" war yet.

I still am impressed by certain design features of cars, they ARE safer and more efficient year after year (even if the efficiency goes towards increasing the power rather than conserving fuel for the most part) but the auto industry is definitely destroying the world.

jeremywhitehorn 07-19-07 05:57 PM

i don't think it's up to any of us, zealots included, to enforce morality. you wouldn't be cool with someone blowing up an abortion clinic or, as you say, a slaughterhouse. besides, the world has much larger problems than one ****** driving a hummer. but don't worry, if the car doesn't kill him the obesity will...

I'm not blinded to the fact that (HMMV) is a symbol of excess. It's the wanton damage of someones property for literally no good reason that is my issue. Under what sort of pretext could you justify doing that? Was it concealing WMDs?

I believe this world is governed by absolute truths but I also believe this thread has had its quota of cynicism filled already. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

iherald 07-19-07 06:00 PM

I personally like to get in my car and drive to the gym. It just makes the most sense! :)

Danhalen 07-19-07 06:11 PM

I'm totally cool with the evil sticker idea and generally being a pain in the ass. I however do not in any way or form condone property damage. Especially in this case.

Where do you draw the line? Is it okay to smash a Hummer? Is it okay to smash a Ford Expedition or Chevy Surburban? Those are also huge SUV's. What about if you see someone driving by themselves in a huge station wagon? Is that excessive? You could probably make an argument that it is. If you're going to expend energy on a worthy cause why not aim to include people in your movement. Alienating people is counter-productive.
