+1

Main streets + taking the lane is the recipe. Or sorta "secondary roads" that are well travelled but typically have lower traffic speeds (eg. Harbord, in my case). On my way in I generally take College and ride well out into the curb 'car lane' (since the bike lane is totally useless right now). Harbord I straddle the divider between the two lanes or the bike-lane divider.

My question: how does the city manage to RE-plow streets with like 0.5cm of new snow, but apparently can't plow the bike lanes?

somnambulant 12-04-07 11:01 AM

No diss for Shapelike's fitting services as he's helped me a bunch in the past, but does anyone know of any shops/coaches/etc that do full fitting sessions with some sort of powermeter/spinscan/etc? Having some sort of quantitative element to bike fit interests me.

edit: I found a couple places.. Enduro-sport seemingly the closest.

TRaffic Jammer 12-04-07 11:07 AM

I just let Mike 'measure' me... ;)

It does seem like bike lanes are a great place to put snow .... new political ammo.
You want us to obey the law ...act like vehicles, but then marginalize us ONCE more when snow comes...Wake TF up Toronto City Counselors!!!! hmmm to the City of Toronto Email list!!!!

There will be a guy coming to town shortly that does awesome fittings. I know this guy...he is from Germany and works for, among others, TUNE components. He did one for Andrew Randall last time he was here to much praise. He does full bio-mechanics and SRM data analysis. It takes a full 6 hours and he will be doing appointment only at La Carrera.

I_bRAD 12-04-07 11:52 AM

They came down harbord and did the bike lanes yesterday. It's still better to ride in the main traffic lane though IMO 'cause the bike lanes just don't have enough traffic to keep them clear. I got to the supermarket (dundas/landsdowne nofrills) on Sunday after work to discover that what was once well used bike racks are now a big pile of snow and ice. I guess I should've bought enough groceries last time to last until March...

somnambulant 12-04-07 11:56 AM

you didn't bring a shovel? pfft.. rookie.

cavernmech: thanks for the info! perhaps I should stop by and see Nadir.. although I'm afraid to know how much a 6 hour session with a foreign guy will cost if a 90minute session at Enduro Sport is $200. :P

That is fantastic. I wonder how fast 4 racing types could get it going?

$400...$200 if you buy a bike. He is extremely well regarded in the fitting world. Philip Moeller is his name and he is originally from Freiburg. I have known him for many years and he is the $#!t when it comes to bike fit.
Edit...I made a rhyme...YAY!

Only one way to find out ;)

I say we get an old caddy and do it up right!

I_bRAD 12-04-07 12:35 PM

We do fittings here too, free with any bike purchase. It's very comprehensive- a thorough standover check, followed by a seat height adjustment (as long as the post isn't frozen)

shapelike 12-04-07 01:51 PM

There's nothing like moving into a new location w/ no lights, heat, internet access, etc.

Seriously, good times.

Okay, my fingers are going numb so I guess it's time to go back to organizing/milling around the space heater.

Edit: My student line of credit application went through. Looks like I'll actually be able to afford school). Woot.

TRaffic Jammer 12-04-07 01:56 PM

Better to get an old honda for lightweight!

The one in the video is an '82 buick regal limited. I've got a '78 regal sport coupe that you can have if you want it... just gotta go pull it out of my folks back yard.

Jerry-rigged fluorescent tubes do not a pleasant retail environment make. And there's a new forced air furnace that's been installed but still needs to be inspected before we can fire it up. Cable connection needs to be run again so in the meantime I'm sneaking up to the old space to check email, etc.

Wee ...

Po-po is wack!

I saw the installation which is still in town until Saturday if anyones interested. http://www.mercerunion.org/

Pretty much the car and a video of them going around NYC I think it was. No, you can't take it for a test drive :D. Unfortunately the artist wasn't there when we were, so no chance to chat about the car.

I also didn't realize before that the motobecane carbon frames ship without the decals applied, which is kinda cool. Not really that interested in those though anyway.

jet sanchez / op: you thinking of ordering anything? I saw you post a couple times in the questions/suggestions thread.

Yeah I was until I read that

1) Shipping is UPS (could get around it if someone is going to states after the holidays)
2) Huge words are absolutely non-removeable from teh rims

Endurosports does fitting with a computrainer

P.S That picnica is wicked!

Yes, it's great! Thanks to IbRAD for the bushing link. I'll see if I can get some bushings to retrofit it, get the seat stays rechromed and it'll be cherry for the summer. I think I'm going to retire it as a winter bike now that the salt is out and I got the cross tires for the Raleigh.

I thought that he wasn't going to ship outside of the US due to the extra forms that have to be filled out and the costum charges he would incur?

Someone in that thread said that it would be a good plan to send it to the UPS store that is close to one of the borders but that this would be the only way for Canadians to get this deal. The Bikesdirect guy also said he would be doing a lighter/stiffer version of the Kilo TT for about $300 or so, that sounds pretty cool to me.

i'm pretty much sticking to the main streets from now until spring. i wouldn't even recommend the martin goodman trail; that's not cleared of snow/ice either.

was it just me or was the image of four people in a car with their feet touching the ground flinstone's style absolutely hilarious? it makes me think: what is illegal about a pedal-powered car? do you have to have it registered even if it's just a chassis?

main streets for me as well...

I still dont understand whats not "safe" about this car? They didnt seem like they were in any danger...except the danger of going to slow ;)

edit: re: the flinstones thang...same thing Marlon said last night when i showed him...WILMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
