Thanks for the info on the Catlike Helmets.

I loved my Catlike helmet. Here's my advice to you: Don't let yours anywhere Dublin taxi drivers. Can you believe no one has heard of Catlike in Berlin? (I want to replace mine and will hopefully get some money from insurance. Yet another reason to hate taxi drivers.) I asked at so many fancy roadie shops and had to explain "lots of tour riders use them... their Spanish" etc. One guy said "oh yeah I think I saw a picture once". Are they common in any country anywhere in the world? Geez.

I must have missed something! I'm assuming you've had an accident? Are you ok? Is the bike ok? :)

The Bicycle Thieves
Jackman Hall, Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas St. W. Toronto. (416-968-FILM; www.cinemathequeontario.ca) 9 p.m. An unemployed man needs a bicycle to get a job. His wife pawns their sheets to buy one, but it is immediately stolen. The man's desperate search through Rome for the precious bike becomes an odyssey in which he meets the best and worst of humanity, struggling to survive amidst the city's postwar confusion. Dir. Vittorio De Sica. Italy 1948. In Italian with English subtitles.

It is an incredible movie, one of my all-time favs. Be warned though, it is gut-wrenchingly sad.

Interesting, it almost sounds similar to Beijing Bicycle (which was excellent by the way, especially if you are fluent in mandarin although the english subtittles were great as well)

somnambulant 08-14-07 05:07 PM

Hey everyone.. I just got an email from Sue Campbell from CBC asking me to come down and do an interviewy type thing tomorrow. While I knew Charlie I'm not sure if someone else might have known him better to do such a thing.. here's the email I got:

----------------------------------------------------

Hi Wes,

I'm a producer at CBC Radio - I've been in touch with Martin Reis who has forwarded me your email. I am wondering if you would be interested in coming in to the studio to talk about Charlie Prinsep. I'm very sorry for your loss. It's just terrible.

The show is Sounds Like Canada and the summer host is Kevin Sylvester, who's a big cyclist.

We'd like you to talk about your friend, what motivated him, what you know about the crash and what we should do about protecting cyclists, the memorial, etc. Martin is going to be a guest too.

Wondering if 12:15 pm tomorrow would work - studio at Front and John?

Please email or call me - 416-705-2902 on my cell.

Many thanks,
Sue Campbell

----------------------------------------------------

If anyone wants to volunteer, or suggest someone, let me know. But this needs to be taken care of asap. I'm totally fine doing it as well, but I just wanted to put it out there first.

TRaffic Jammer 08-14-07 05:33 PM

Wes ... do you remember that reporters name?

somnambulant 08-14-07 05:38 PM

ps. Just sent Shimon a msg about it on facebook.

nope, sorry. She's supposed to be calling me tomorrow afternoon though.

I_bRAD 08-14-07 05:41 PM

Do you know when it's scheduled to air?

jeremywhitehorn 08-14-07 05:43 PM

how did the CBC get wind of the funeral today? it would be great for someone to speak about charlie and have his legacy cast to a wide audience.

i have to say it was a difficult day but made easier by everyone's presence. it's nice to see that much support amongst us all; you would have made charlie proud (and all looking sharp i might add).

hope you all had a good time at house on parliament.

cavit8 08-14-07 06:01 PM

An interesting offer. Wes, I think you'll do a good job. Kevin did a piece on cycling in Vancouver
http://www.cbc.ca/radioshows/SOUNDS_...20070712.shtml so I doubt you'll get drawn into a bicycle helmet debate or some fool thing. The only thing I might suggest from my previous dealings with media is think of the most dumbass polarizing question you can and have a response ready to bring things back under control. I've gotten hit with a couple of those in the past.

Here's a brief bio on him http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/perso...C+Radio+Sports

I spoke briefly with Thoby after the service. And being the **** I am wasn't able to say anything poignant, but he did say how much it meant to the family of the support from the biking community and how amazing it was.

operator 08-14-07 06:15 PM

I actually ran into martino who told me about the CBC radio thing before I came home an hour ago - I would go, but I don't think i'd be the best person.

I nominate cavit8.

No can dooeey, thanks though.

SamHouston 08-14-07 06:37 PM

I was contacted as well at a bike shop, but I only knew Charlie here on the internet and at bike shops, we never rode together socially, only by chance on Harbord once in a while & a mass or two. He did take time to help me with some questions I had about the way things work here in Canada, thanks to his study of transportation and urban planning.

All I can add about Sue & CBC is that she indicated that it would be aired immediately, hence the strict timing, perhaps live, as I'm fairly certain much of the show is, the host is live. We listen occasionally in the workshop, it's a good program.

That's good advice, keep it human, not heated even though it's a raw subject. It'll be good for people outside of cycling bubbles to know who Charlie was. I just can't believe that someone who was so obviously already part of the solution and going to be a greater part of it in the future could be lost.

somnambulant 08-14-07 07:10 PM

yeah, I'm totally fine with speaking on air.. I just feel like there must be someone out there who knew him better than I. But, maybe that's just me being a ****.

duppy.conqueror 08-14-07 07:24 PM

yes! toronto fixed massive repped at the funeral...nice one guys!

Wes good luck with the interview. HOP was there to cheer us up along with the guiness!

Fuzzz 08-14-07 07:33 PM

it was great seeing everyone make it out to the funeral. not a fun thing to do but it had to be done. Charlie would have been proud to see us all there. just listening to people talk about him made me think he was a guy on track to greatness.

Agreed, I counted 20+ of us which was great to see. There were some faces there I recognized and some that came out of the woodwork (looking at you, sr20), so the support was likely really appreciated.

Sara and I will be at the ride this Friday.

shapelike 08-14-07 09:14 PM

Wes, can you add an event in the I Bike Toronto group? I appear to be too dumb to pull that off (stupid Facebook).

jeremywhitehorn 08-14-07 10:25 PM

is the interview tomorrow on cbc 1 or 2?

shapelike 08-14-07 10:43 PM

From the other thread:

Stream CBC 91.1 on 08/15 around 12:30pm. Some of Charlie's friends will be talking about him and the memorial ride on Friday.
