So I just got back from meeting Lance Armstrong! He was giving a talk for AMD, and I was lucky enough to sneak an invite with some people. I got to watch his talk and then after was lead into a back room and got to meet him.

Unfortunately the people I was with were supposed to get an hour with him before his presentation, but his flight was delayed so we didn't get very long after. Nonetheless, it was pretty cool.

Apparently he swears by Assos chamois creame, and thinks that all professional sports should have the same doping regulations, because he said cycling looks bad because it's by far the most stringent and therefore they catch the most people. the NHL looks good because they don't test.

+1 I have to run my bike with a threadless adapter and no locknut. It's like a crappy mash of threaded and threadless setup.

you beat me to it; i was about to ask that. seeing as it's on a saturday night i was planning on checking some of it out after work, around midnight or 1:00. i think that's probably an appropriate time. just say where you'd want to meet up and i'll show up reeking of garlic, salmon and sweat.

about the winter shoes: there is a guy i've ridden fixies with in the past who is very into getting the best of the best gear-wise (don't worry, he has good taste and is a talented, avid rider) and i seem to remember him speaking highly of the sidi winter boots and also i believe the northwaves. for my money, though, i'm all about full fenders, regular spds lined with plasitc bags, wool socks and maybe some toe covers.

EDIT: last winter i used the shimano spds with the lace-cover flap and they seemed warm enough most of the time. just build up enough of a fat layer that you don't feel the cold. besides, you're not in montreal anymore! we don't get winter here...

What's the going rate for a Krypto Evo mini around these parts / does anyone know of a good deal? I've been finding that I tend not to go places where I need to lock up (which works for not getting my bike stolen, but is annoying) since I'm not confident in my cheap/low end black "Kryptonite Keeper". Oh, and I would like something light enough that I could toss it in my bag without thinking about weight.

EDIT: I just measured and the tire clearance on my conversion is probably too big to lock wheel+frame with a mini ulock. Any alternate suggestions? Locking frame only / cable for wheels, or locking the rear wheel "sheldon style"?

Hi, I like bikes.

That's what I always do. If I know my bike is going to be locked up for an extended period I'll often take my crypto cable and run it through the front wheel as well.

My main concern with the rear-wheel only method isn't the physical security of it (as I know how hard it is to cut metal under compression).. it's the mentality of the crackhead bike thief that I find a bit dubious. If someone in an "altered state" sees only the wheel locked, they might think it's insecure and wreck the bike trying to steal it..

re: the Sheldon method. I had a bike stolen a whole bunch of years ago. I friend found it locked up on the street at Huron and Dupont. He put his own lock on it...left a note for the ****** that basically said the owner of the 22' mtn bike is on his way to retrieve it...and came and got me. We headed back up and whe we got there the afforementioned ****** had un-locked the bike but put his lock around the back rim/tire. Not content with allowing this assclown to get my back wheel (old Campy Euclid hub on a Bontager custom ma-40) I strolled down the block to the Stevensons rent-all...borrowed a hack-saw...and sliced through the tire/rim/tube in about 30 secs. once cut it didn't take much to spread the rim apart enuf to pull the lock out. Moral of the story is this method is not really all that secure. Use the good lock to lock your frame always...use a secondary cable if need be.

Exustars seem to be a pretty good bang for the buck from what I've seen. An even better bang for the buck was last year when they were clearing out the "old" winter shoes, AKA the $250 Lake winter shoes for $50!
