Yeah, what Dan said. As anyone who I've mountain biked this year will attest to, I fall down a LOT. Does it stop me from riding? Hell no! Well, only when I've temporarily injured myself enough to keep me off the trails. :P

And yeah, we've all done the 0mph fall over. That has little to do with riding fixed and a lot to do with getting used to a new pedal system. You should see me skittering around trying to get clipped into the pedals on my road bike (speedplay zero's). Yowza!

Hey don't worry about it man. You're just a dude on a bike. We've ALL been there (the 0-mph fallover). This one time I was at Yonge and Dundas on a typical work day for me. For some reason I also had tightened my left strap way too much. When I pulled up to the light, I tried to pull my foot out and my foot just came out of my shoe, which stayed in the pedal, while I went down kind of half cursing/half laughing. There weren't too many witnesses luckily. Also, luckily it was a dry day.

Nice. Unfortunately for me, there were some dudes right nearby laughing their asses off. I laughed with them, because I don't embarrass easily and I thought the noise I made as I went down was pretty funny, but they didn't give me the pleasure. They were laughing at me. Whatever.

I'm up for a ride tonight, but I don't get done with my tutorials until 6:30 and then I have to transit back into the city, which can take up to an hour+, depending how long I have to wait for bus/sub/streetcar/all three. So if you're not meeting up until 7:30-8, I'll be there. Don't postpone it for me, though.

Trying to clip into brand new Look Keo road pedals while riding on the wrong side of the road in Scotland this summer was good times (although nearly ended in pain)

Meh, wipeouts happen, I wouldn't worry about it, at least the only thing hurt was your pride. I wipeouted a few years ago and landed on my hands and this guy called out to me from the sidewalk "Hey man, you okay?" which, for some reason, made things worse ;)

Does anyone here use Twitter, other than Fuzzz and myself? :)

+1 to what the others said... I almost fell at the Lansdowne/College/Dundas intersection the first time I rode with SPDs, but other than a yard fall, I didn't do a full proper fall until about 3 weeks ago - right at lunchtime, right at King/Duncan :)

Don't fret it, it happens. Hope to see some of you later.

somnambulant 09-20-07 01:56 PM

For those of you that want to ride, I have no clue where you all live, so I don't know where to suggest meeting. Nerdsgirth and I both live in the Bloor/Ossington area.

Anyone have a good route suggestion for riding out to the Bluffs? Brad? I guess we can just take Queen -> Kingston Rd. But I'm not sure if there are other, quieter options.

Tyler M 09-20-07 01:59 PM

Yeah, the only thing more embarrassing than the 0 mph fall-over is accidentally using HTML on boards and having everyone quote it. Whoops.

Curious, I just set up a Twitter profile. I haven't looked at it much, so I'm not sure how it works or if I'll use it, though. Gotta go to class. Maybe I'll see some of you later -- like I said, don't delay the ride waiting for me or anything. There will be other rides.

TRaffic Jammer 09-20-07 02:04 PM

All low/no speed falls must happen at city core intersections or in front of many people. It's the same way that when you pull up to a light and rip the perfect one handed trackstand for the duration of the light, there is nobody around to see it.

zippered 09-20-07 02:06 PM

you can also take mortimer/danforth, although you still end up on kingston for a bit. have fun - i wish i had more energy to ride there, but right now that seems so far away.

The crickets and squirrels were laughing their azzes off....they are just really subtle and didn't want to hurt your feelings.

TRaffic Jammer 09-20-07 02:15 PM

too many of those stalls to count for me..
in the wrong gear to hit the hill.......urgh.. *falls over* that's me.

at least mud makes for cushier landing! (although it was the mud that made me unable to unclip...)

Flimflam 09-20-07 02:21 PM

I'd take Bloor/Danforth all the way to Kingston and then over to Brimley. Kingston road/any road south of Danforth inevitably leads you up a steep climb unless you come up Coxwell (which I think is the nicer of all the uphill major streets to Danforth level). That being said, it's nice to ride near the lake on a day like this, and there's not much of this weather left.

Cosburn is a little north, but has the bike lane - Mortimer is fast, but can have rush hour traffic on a fair bit. May as well take Danforth proper, IMO.

TRaffic Jammer 09-20-07 02:25 PM

Big fire at Vic Park and Danforth .. auto wreckers...*avoid*

I ride out along the waterfront path until it ends then head up to Queen and make the big climb up Fallingbrook to Kingston road. Kinda sucky from there, but if you catch the lights right the rolling hills are nice and fast :)

Stop teasing.

I spent the day making pumpkin muffins, bread and squares with and without choc chips and cranberries. Baking ain't so tough after all. Soon it shall be Portuguese Egg Custard tarts, garnished with little fixed wheels in honour of our retiring Cavernmech who first introduced me to those heavenly creations.

What is the timeline for tonights ride? Since I'm at Danforth already, any of the aforementioned routes works for me. I just need to be home in time to plan tomorrows classes ( more like should I have them make Choc cupcakes or brownies) and drive Shamu to the hospital if baby decides to arrive.

Not sure where you usually head south on, but the MGT is open through from Cherry Beach to the Unwin bridge again, which is an option. The north-of-lakeshore path isn't too bad for that stretch, but obviously way less scenic.

Time/place?

good point on the whole fire evacuation dealie.

i've pretty much taken over as "cook" in the kitchen at work for the year... i'm not a chef... i tried making muffins this week for the first time in ages; they were ok, but i wasn't impressed. i'd love a good/cheap/easy (i know, just like me) recipe if you don't mind sharing!

edit:  @ "shamu"... it's that time already eh? best of luck!
