There are a couple of Bicycle Megathreads in the Watch and Weight forum, check them out, some of the goons have nice rides.

sorry on the slowness, but damn. I come back to check on the thread and Keith's shop is closed down!?
whats going on!?

pyze-guy 12-02-07 12:07 AM

Wow, goki and sr20det in the same night.

jeremywhitehorn 12-02-07 01:50 AM

any one else ride in the snowy madness tonight? i took a nice spill on my way home from work tonight in the middle of college st. as i'm pushing my bike on the sidewalk some girl yells "you can do it, i believe in you!". deffinately the first "winter" ride of the year. any one else still getting their winter legs?

sr20det 12-02-07 02:52 AM

I rode through the Waterloo winter last year on the GT. and I winterized it by fashioning fenders out of 2L pop bottles, zip ties, and disposable chopsticks as support.
Note: 23c tires cut through snow and slush alright. but are AWFUL in corners. I fell off and crashed more times than I'd like to count last year. and I forsee the same happening again this winter.

btw, I just pulled the trigger on this.

Its actually my first road build and have minimal knowledge about gears.
Someone please give me a crash course!
Surly Pacer
and I'm hoping it'd turn out as awesome as this!

You could have done better for the money. That frame is regular old 4130, which is the same as an Urbanite. Also, you may regret it if there's any surface rust. Steel will require more maintenance, and I wouldn't ride that in the city over this winter.

Operator, sr20det both picking up geared road bikes... is this a sign that the fad is beginning to wear off? :D

Nice looking ride. Yes cornering=slowly in winter. Even wet concrete intersection pads get treacherous as I've discovered.

Gears are easy. Click one way is easier, click another is harder. The challenge is more not to get caught at one end or the other when you really don't want to be there. Anticipation is something I'm still working on.

somnambulant 12-02-07 11:02 AM

hahaha.. op and his deep section alloy dreamz. :P

kergin 12-02-07 11:10 AM

Oh, man: I just installed Open Suse 10.3 on my T60, and its so better than Ubuntu and Fedora it's not even funny. Looks like Novell has their sh*t together on this one.

I realize this post makes me come off as a jerk. I guess I'm just bitter about steel frames and rust. OP, there's a guy selling a 54 or 56 CAAD5 on ebay for $250 Buy it Now, which is a markedly better frameset than the Surly.

I like steel and I think that Surly makes a great product. I'd thought about picking up a Pacer myself as it has eyelets for fenders.

Operator, that front rim on the Surly looks like a Velocity Deep-V, no?

Here is what I wanted to do when I thought about getting a Surly a couple of years ago. I think this frame-set is a Long Haul Trucker, it would be perfect for a day like today:

I'm wondering if it's really necessary to treat steel bikes with framesaver or T-9.

Qualified maybe. I'd tend to linseed oil myself as not being so friggin' toxic. I've never seen a cared for steel frame disintegrate. Maybe if you never washed salt off or let it sit outside so water could capillary in and pool in the nooks and crannies...

I've wondered about this as well. I'd hate to be riding along and have the head-tube come apart from the top-tube or get a down-tube buckling from a weakened steel tube.

The guys in the Classics and Vintage forum state that a soaking in oxalic acid will clear out any rust inside the tubes and I am going to give it a shot when I re-do the Ciocc sometime soon. As far as I can tell there is no rust inside the frame but it is about 25 years old, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a soak anyways, just to be sure. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

700x23c tires cut though the snow, Up to a point Once they start to float its all over. Anyone else ride in that Crazy storm last night, Very fun but, i think i need something with a front disc.

I_bRAD 12-02-07 01:15 PM

I didn't ride last night.. but i did ride to work today. Sloppy out there! I dumped it a few times after getting my front wheel caught in heavy snow/slush but otherwise it's not too bad out I guess. I put on my 26X1.6 knobbies today and ran them at 40psi. I think that helped a bit.

I rode in today on a steel bike which I bought new in '91 (plain 'ol 4130 too!) and it's still great. Never been treated and the only rust is surface rust where the paint was dinged a few times. If you take care of it it's not an issue.

mm. thats true. I could have just got an urbanite, frame. oh well.
quick question, any shops or places actually sell frame saver? if not, I'll just go get some rust prevention spray from crappytire.

Ah, I'll always ride fixed for commuting. I just want something a bit more comfortable for lake simcoe rides.
and to learn about gears, its getting embarassing that I don't know jack about them.
Once I got that down, I'll build up a tandem! hoorah.

Those rims, no idea. cxp 14's? custom drilled deep v's? or that weird gipiemme set? not a clue.
