[Scene] Taking my bike through finch station, on the escalator, bike shouldered walking up the left side, with 1 other person in front

Suddenly I hear this -

Dickhead: WHY BRING A BIKE ON THE ESCALATOR
Dickhead: WHY BRING A BIKE ON THE ESCALATOR (I think he actually said this twice)
Me: (Stops and turns around with my shouldered bike) You have a problem?
Dickhead: No
Me: You have a problem with my bike?
Dickhead: No
Me: Then shut the **** UP

Let's also ignore the fact that I wasn't

a) inconvenincing anyone
b) to not be a dick, I didn't ride through the station like I could have

Guy must have looked at me and thought I was some idiot who would take ****** comments like that sitting down. Seriously what the ****?

jet sanchEz 07-05-08 06:33 PM

People suck.

I was riding along last night in front of the Drake and I got this:

****polisher-in-car: GET ON THE SIDEWALK!

I was really tempted to kick his side mirror as I passed him 20 seconds later. I would have gotten away with it as traffic was packed but karma-wise, I would have been pooched. Pissed me off though.

What does the NJS certification mean?

Is it that all parts with the NJS logo are within a certain tolerance? or built a certain way?

I am only asking because I see it everywhere and tend to pay no attention to it, and was wondering if I should. I tried to search but I couldn't find anything (even on google, mind you computers hate me)

[/stupid question]

NjS certification to hipsters mean everything. Realistically it means jack ****.

I thought it was for two reasons: 1) ensure no racer has an equipment advantage over the other, and 2) equipment meet minimum safety requirements for Keirin racing.

I enjoy the Deathare answer: buy NJS stuff if you need cheap gear. Honestly, there's much nicer stuff out there which isn't NJS than stuff which is. One simple example are framesets: Argon 18 makes a nicer track frame than a good number of NJS builders.

FWIW, NJS only matters in Japan Keirin. UCI is cool with lots more variety of stuff - just not the Y-foil.

Exactly.. I don't think it really speaks to the quality of the part, just that it meets the organizing body's specifications -- which I wouldn't assume means it's "good" necessarily (or bad, for that matter).

Analogy to 'cross: The UCI says that cyclocross bikes can't have disc brakes... are canti's "better" than discs? or vice versa? I think it depends on what your own preferences/needs are, but a cx bike with discs automatically isn't UCI-legal.

Rofl.

Yeah deathhare. He's right on a lot of stuff /sarcasm

Like a locked wheel stops faster than one that isn't.

That's true, but on the other hand, with the large number of skinny white hipsters moving to Japan and racing Keirin these days, it sort of makes sense to go fully-NJS the first time so you don't need to re-buy any components down the road.

Excellent comparison

Are they easy to break? Anyone done it? You would get instant karma if they aren't though :p

Speaking of unnecessary bike dingdongs and cyclocross braking, I want these badly: http://www.bikeradar.com/gallery/art...er-16035?img=4

i usually avoid commuting home on king/queen streets on weekend nights as the opportunity of hitting a pedestrian whilst they hop into a cab is too great.

My mom noticed our dog eyeing up the kids a few yards down in their kiddie pool, so she got the dog a pool of her own. Apparently the dog absolutely loves having pool parties. I found this photo of my dog randomly hanging out in a kiddie pool hilarious for some reason.

Who's with me? We can finally push Igor out of business.

Not the last time I was in there... but who knows?

yellotrace 07-06-08 10:51 AM

I'm set on buying a steamroller, but the cheapest I can find in Toronto is $850. Whereas it's less than $650 american. The price difference is enough for a whole set of upgrades to components... Should I just buy from a LBS? or take a shopping trip across the border. Anyone have experience with this?

Either order online or go across the border. It's not worth getting ***** here. Another example: the Jamis Sputnik is around 1G locally and 7 bills down south.

~Stuart~ 07-06-08 12:14 PM

and then the sputnik is close to 1500 here... but in euros

(is happy he will be home by friday... blackmail the only way to get things done)

yellotrace 07-06-08 12:50 PM

i'm just worried about customs. Maybe I can find something in buffalo.

I_bRAD 07-06-08 01:09 PM

Surely a trip to buffalo is gonna run you near 200 bucks when all is said and done... and that's assuming you don't end up with duties on top of that.

And then you bring it across the border wherence you get taxed 13%. And you lose the ability to go to your LBS for warranty service. Unless you know how to do your own work and have the tools, in which case it's moot.

So you then have less than $170 to play around with, assuming it costs you nothing ot get there and back + time spent. Given the right circumstances it would be cheaper to go across the border.

yellotrace 07-06-08 01:39 PM

although i visit toronto because my family lives there. I'm living in London Ontario for school. I don't think any LBS in London carries surly. Would LBS be able to order one for me?

haha! I actually think it is awesome how elitist the Keirin series is in Japan. There has never been a non Japanese champion in any of the classes in the history of Keirin. Ben Day and Curt Harnett among others found out it didn't matter how fit you were there, if you were foreign you were getting teamed up on. I think they only allow two foreigners into keirin school per season.
