yup, definately gonna have use of them.. but the big task is now at hand.. my current cranks are COTTERED! looks like i'll have to get some help from my trusty martello.


i dove right into my project and learned by trial & error, but had some help from sheldon's site. i was able to do most of my wrenching with the tools i had handy, and the only one i had to buy was a chainwhip. i'd say the tool i used most was the channel-locks.

When I was young I'd twist brake cables with pliers and use a socket wrench to tighten my U-brakes. I got a lot of bleeding fingers that way. Later in life I used a hammer and wood to to smash cranks off the BB spindle (don't worry they were only DA ;) :crash:

Anyway that was long time ago. And I look back an laugh :lol: A lot of stuff is trial and error. You really do learn along the way. The scariest thing is screwing up nice new stuff.

I learned with crappy used stuff. Building a beater was my way of learning. Buying used parts and upgrade an old bike.

An excellent resource is the West End Bike Club. It's (was?) run by Nani (The East Indian? fellow that sometimes works part time at Urbane). The club was held every Wednesday evening located in the parking garage structure of some Westend mall? near leslie or.. I forget its been years since I last went. Anyway they'd have workshops to teach you how to repair your own bike. They've got lots of used parts you can buy if you want to fix up a junker. Also Parts unknown (in kengsington) had a lot of used parts.

So yeah that's how I learned, buying used parts and tooling around.

I don't think the West End bike club is there anymore, but I could be wrong---it was at Dufferin Mall on Thursday nights. I always meant to go and check it out but never got around to it.

For example, they recommend using loctite#242 for regular shimano cart bb installations instead of grease. In fact they say not to put anything at all in the bb shell unless you're worried about corrosion!

(Yes i'm aware of the other cases where loctite is a good idea).

Want a major pain in the ass in replacing bb's, start loctiting them.

So, I'm riding Eastbound on College this morning just before Bathurst. Traffic on College is stopped for a red and I want to stop at Manic for a coffee, so I ride to the opposite curb. As I'm crossing the road the College traffic gets a green light. There are two Westbound cyclists heading towards me so I move into the parking-zone, inside the bike lane. I slow down to give them plenty of time to get by me. The first one goes by, no prob. Second one? Rides along about 2' from the curb staring at me, continues into the parking zone when the bike lane moves out from the curb and says "get the **** outta my way" as he basically rubs elbows with me. Seriously dude? Pick your battles. There are exceptions, but as a general rule I really hate people... especially really self-important ones. Sure I was riding on the wrong side of the road, but I was about 5' away from the bike lane that he could/should have been in. *sigh* Then at Spadina a car sped past and nearly right-hooked me, but that's nothing new.

Ahh, Monday. *cracks knuckles*

I wonder what percentage of Torontos stolen bikes go through Igor. That picture of them all piled out there just shows how many there are, and note the big Police cube van in the corner for scale =|.

Christ! With that many bikes, maybe my old Talisman (true Canadian bike, yo!) mountain bike is in there. It got jacked in 1988 but seriously, I think the chances are pretty good with that many bikes. Wow.

Thats what Im saying! Anything that was in good enough shape to prevent it being parted is probably still kicking around in there. Its like a time capsule of custom trends and builds and projects running back twenty years, captured as they were in progress or completed or just starting out.

There should be a catalogue created with the custom builds in there to follow the trends.

but don't forget that the cops "accidentally" caught Igor stealing someone else bike, not even the real bait bike. And they basically had to trip over him to see it happening.... it's not a like a crack squad team and months of undercover investigation lead to all this. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad at least some people will get their bikes back, but I don't share the same warm fuzzies as a lot of other people because the police are 'sort of' doing their job....

Someone buy that Concorde on CL before I do, please! I am really tempted, the price is good and I like the old Shimano 600 stuff.
