Those pictures are very helpful, thanks. I do remember when this same discussion came up earlier in the thread and I always figured that the Marinoni had a very similar wheelbase to that of the GTBs. It is pretty close in fact, so I think that the big difference is just simply that the GTB is fixed and the Marinoni is not, so I have to be more attentive when riding the Marinoni on the rollers.

It is weird because it is the exact opposite on the street, I almost tune out when riding a road bike cuz I can always just slam on the brakes if there is a problem.

somnambulant 01-23-08 05:10 PM

I wouldn't necessarily say it's the fact that it's a fixed gear. There's a zillion variables.. minute differences in geometry/weight distribution, different wheel weights (heavy rim = greater angular momentum = they 'want' to stay upright), different tires, etc, etc, etc.

Then again, I've never ridden rollers at all, let alone being able to distinguish between riding them fixed v. free. :)

Give me a call and all will be revealed. ;)

Does anyone have any truing stand recommendations? I'm basically looking for the most affordable yet still halfway decent truing stand.

I dont know who sells em but the Minoura Workman is a good quality, reasonably priced stand.

14/16? Do you weigh 90lbs? :p I finally bit the bullet and asked cycle solutions to build me a fixed/free wheel with the White ENO and an Open Sport rim. I was gonna get a standard track hub, but this one offers me the flexibility to use on any frame.

Haha. And yes I weigh 120

paul_in_toronto 01-23-08 11:54 PM

speedbikedude: Hi I think I am the Polly you are looking for. Yes I am closing down my shop.
Any other rumors are news to me, perhaps someone on this forum lives in an alternative universe where a doppleganger version of me goes out of bussiness every 2 months..
Just send me a private message for directions contact info etc.. sorry dont think im allowed to post that here.

MATT : no that was not me, this is me.
Trying to think of a good cheap truing stand to reccommend you.. hmm I saw some black truingstand in the basement. Might be possessed by the devil but thats not a big problem for you right?

LordFoo 01-24-08 06:20 AM

somnambulant: I haven't ridden on rollers either.. my previous commentary should be taken with a grain of salt as it was based purely on my extensive training as an engineer + talking out of my arse. Maybe some ppl should work out a roller/trainer swap program? :)

operator: 120? sweet jesus.. go train a bit and become a climber for a pro team

polly: I think the confusion is probably because it seems like you've been going out of business for quite a while (almost a year?) From your CL posts, it seems that you've still got quite a lot of stock to clear.
PS - Got any cheap rollers? ;) (although I think the wife would kill me if I brought another piece of large cycling equipment into the living room)

I like veggie chili a lot, personally! Vegan chili wouldn't really be that different other than the fact that I wouldn't sprinkle cheddar and/or dollop sour cream on the top.

Haha, thanks Polly. I have no problems with the devil at all!
I'll shoot you an email in a bit...

bugs give me the creeps, man.

TRaffic Jammer 01-24-08 08:42 AM

Hmmm my chilli has der burger in it. I wish I'd known sooner I could have worked out a vegan version.
So is it like a southern cook off? Big pots and ingredients everywhere, and then the homeless all walk away with food and monies from the registration? I like it!!!

And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

In other news... Who thinks 68" is a good gear for the ice race? I'm thinking it's too low, but does anyone else have an opinion?

somnambulant 01-24-08 09:43 AM

That doesn't sound ultra low to me.. I mean the rink is pretty small. I'm running ~71" and I can easily get up to 30km/h (@ around 90rpm), which I'm guessing is pretty fast for that little rink.

I_bRAD 01-24-08 09:49 AM

So what you're saying is that as long as you can spin faster than me, you win! :p

Ah well, 68 is the best I can do without making things complicated. Guess I'll just have to play dirty!

somnambulant 01-24-08 10:06 AM

Who said I'm riding a fixie? :)

TRaffic Jammer 01-24-08 10:09 AM

Once the finals come both sides are opened up and it is a bigger rink.
as well if Jim shows up you're racing for second place.. He has a reign of terror on the ice.
