I don't really like that bike either.. the "been in the oven too long" comment pretty much summed it up for me. I do however like a lot of stuff that Sascha White has put out, and I don't see the connection at all between the Vanilla/Speedvagen stuff and that bike. For example, I think these bikes are dreamy:

The attention to detail is pretty mind blowing... although the 5-yr wait list is pretty unreal.
Of the stuff I saw from the NAHMBS, I'm really really digging the aesthetic of this new company, 333Fab. eg:

Ira Ryan's stuff looks pretty nice too. Mmmm... Rapha Continental team bike:

ps. I originally made a typo of 'summed' as 'summer'. *wistful sigh*

Good point. Which is kind of silly considering that Nagasawas are beautiful (and right up my alley) but there are similar custom frames for much less coin. When you fork out money for something like a Vanilla you are paying for a lot of detail work and time etc. In that sense it makes more sense I suppose. It may not be my cup of tea but I understand why someone with money to burn would pay for that. Paying $1700 for a Nagasawa is kind of pointless, when you can get something like a Mercian for example for under half of that.

Caller: A bicycle with studded tires.
Officer: (another pregnant pause) You say you're seeing bicycles with
studded tires?
Caller: Yes. I saw a tall guy with a big bushy beard on Main Street riding a
beat-up, junky bicycle with STUDDED TIRES.
Officer: (starting to sound a lot like Frank Nelson of old time radio shows)
I see. And was there a pink elephant, too?
Caller: On his helmet?
Officer: (positively dripping sarcasm now) No, riding a junky bicycle with
studded tires right behind the first guy!
Caller: (getting annoyed now) C'mon, I'm serious. This guy is breaking the
law. Aren't you going to do anything about him?
Officer: Why, was he also robbing pedestrians?
Caller: What, the cyclist?
Officer: NO, THE PINK ELEPHANT!
Caller: Officer, don't you know it's against the law to operate a vehicle in
Ontario with studded tires???
Officer: Don't you have something more important to do than make crank calls
to the police department**********

The sound is virtually useless when riding. It'll pick up your vioce if you carry it. On a sunny day it's awesome. I've made better frame mounts with cheap stuff from Home depot, so I can get right down low off the fork. Do you sell the bike version with the elbow mounts? I love mine and have made several gigs of video. You hardly notice it when using it on your helmet, though the low bike position gives a better sensation of speed. The high energy AAA requirements make at least 2 pairs of rechargeables a must, and a couple 2G SD cards if your to be out for a while. Lower light recordings bite it large, but dusk isn't too too bad. I'm going to try and adjust the darker ones in some video editting wares to see if I can make them better. I'm still al little bummed I haven't had a good traffic rip since I got it. Water and shockproof...right up my alley of clumsiness. All said, I love it. I wish I had 6 of them for all angle recording. A film maker friend of mine has snatched up a few days of recording for something he's working on.
The best part about Keiths story was me doing his work today! hahaha jk
Here is something I came upon. Way too big for me (58x58) but is going to make a wicked project. The rear wheel was replaced at some point and the original shifters are long gone but the coolest front derailer is there. Also needs the correct cable guides in a few spots. If I was a jerk I'd say it would make a very sweet S.S. .......but I' not a jerk. haha

Cool front der. w/post to push chain cage. Pardon the shaky hands.

This guy loves it!

Nothing says "I'm trying too hard" like riding around on a bike like this. It bugs me. I can appreciate the craftsmanship I suppose. Although Brooks Saddle + zero setback seatpost = ridiculously forward saddle position. Doesn't look too comfortable at all. And what's up with that chainring? Not drilled for lightness I would imagine, considering the wood rims. It looks like a steering wheel from a 1970's Firebird. I know I'm like the only one in the world who doesn't like the whole "Vanilla Cycles" esthetic so what do I know.

Bikes: Menonite black urbanite, probably enough spare parts to make anther one.
i'm not saying i like the bike to ride it, but from an show bike standpoint i found it pretty impressive and innovative. i should say that my dream bike is probably a matt chester custom, which is probably about the simplest frame you could imagine.

I think it felt colder out there this morning than it did yesterday.

i love how when storing a bike inside, going out into the cold, and after 10 minutes riding you can feel
the tires getting nice and squishy. that 30+ degree temperature drop makes a difference.

Oh yah, they're having a group buy, carbon-clincher wheelset on crappy joytech hubs for $700. 50mm deep. No branding.

Any decent manufacturer would have very very few "rejects" Definitely not enough for a group buy. Also, any rejects they did have would never make it to market.

I'm not saying all the sales available are sketchy; the Pedal Force and Bike's Direct Kestrel ones are just a good deal. But some stuff that people snatch up really gives you pause for thought.

I thought the opposite, probably just the wind has changed as it didn't seem as bitter. Should be an interesting ride home with the snow over the ice - time to take the lanes....

Wind was against us eastbound commuters, making a bit of difference today I guess. I was saddened it was the same base temp as yesterday, after thinking it'd be a tad warmer with the higher high of the day.
Lots and lots of the white ****e, +1 on taking the lane and watch for the hidden tracks!
