My nemesis is the blue University Hospital Network shuttle bus that travels along College. That thing has tried to kill me countless times. It used to be a short-yellow bus on Harbord, but I usually use College nowadays. Something about buses!

Wes, is the race this weekend Riverdale?

It's all the about the readability of your design. I went last year to Cedervale I think it was, though that doesn't excuse me from this year.
|
Congrats on the job Cam, finally gives me a riding partner when I go to Ottawa.
I`ll see you all Sunday at the race, hope it rains. |

In other news, I just spent the afternoon in the Don. Good times. |

In response, I direct you to my signature which clearly has not provided a very useful service since I've seen those sorts of questions a bunch of times and I haven't seen any of you non-racers (besides Cavit8) at a race yet this season. ;)

Tough major decision to make in the upcoming days.
Do I run the s/s mtb as a rigid, or put a suspension fork on? |

Unemployment? What's that?
Seriously I've been out of work since June after finishing my Masters so no UI for me and its getting a little thin. But it is nice to pooch off for the day and go disc golfing or what have you, though. It was amazing on the island today. But the life of poverty/freedom is coming to an end 'cause it looks like I'll be working in Ottawa for the next 9-12 months. If anyone knows anyone interested in an inexpensive two bedroom apartment (I'm talking $680 w/o parking + utilities - I think parking's $30) for Dec 1 let me know. I'll be giving notice on Monday. Second floor of a low rise with quiet neighbours at the intersection of two bike lanes (jones and Dundas) in the fortunately overlooked but amazing east end. Walking distance to amazing coffee, amazing chicken shwarma and a beer store. Right in between LIttle Chinatown and little India. PM me with any questions you may have. We have acquaintances in common. Like the crossing guard at Leslie. I'm sure we've seen each other a thousand times too because I live around the corner. I don't know you though. Not a stalker. Just want shwarma. Cycle Therapy rocks (hi everybody). |

what's cycle therapy ? never heard of it , I rode around the city after work tonight and out bloor/danforth and saw alot of fixed/single speeds , I gave a small wave to each but just got stares, so much for the next generation of riders f*ck um ,,,,,,, so who's going to the race Sat/Sun
|
Depends on if my daughter is down, I'll try to make the race(s) though.
Cycle Therapy is on Queen St. E near ... Greenwood? (side street nearby is Winnifred, I believe). I finally changed my drivetrain over to 1/8" all round and dropped a couple of teeth from my sprocket. I didn't bother swapping cranks yet but have a Sugino 46T ring on the front and a 15T (Dura-ace) cog on the back. Took it for a quick boot around the block, thing feels *fast* when I put some torque into it. A gnats pube over 7500km on that original chainring, it's not TOO screwed, but it's got chewed pretty bad by my negligent care - the wheel/cog was used during winter last year on other bikes, so it's seen way more action and neglect. Looks like the chain was on for all but 200km of those 7500 (installed April 21st :O) - so that's fared pretty well considering the use/abuse. Can't wait to give it a whirl heading up/down Keele tomorrow. Edit: forgot to mention... MAN my road bike was fun to ride today :D (it's basically on reserve duty only these days) |
hey guys, i just found this thread... see fixed and s/s bikes around all the time when i'm out riding or commuting. I usually blast right down yonge st. On a mid-build blue miele with a red TTP.
I'm running a 52T chain rings... and am still debateing my rear cog. Any suggestions?? I don't really care about skidding, but i wanna go fast. I usually ride on my 52 with the 2nd smallest or smallest cog on my rear casssette. On a side note... has anyone been to the new Dukes location on richmond?? |
The shwarma is at Queen Pita, north side O'Queen just east of Hastings..one block East of Leslie.
Man, we ALL live around that corner, I'm on Hastings. The falaphel(sp?) is amazing there, Gus is such a good chef, and he makes everything himself. |

On my road bike I mostly stick to 52:19 or occasionally 52:17 (4th and 5th cog in my cassette) (72.2GI and 80.7GI respectively) so I tried to go with something similar when I put my fixie together. My original 46:17 was 71.1GI and now I'm running a 15T on the back, giving me 80.6 - so I've matched them up fairly well to what I'm used to. This new ratio will likely kick my ass for a bit but I want the training/speed. I'd say go as close to what you're used to, or a little shorter/smaller if you're starting out riding a fixed gear. Use the Rabbit Gear Calculator to figure out equivalent ratios with different cogs (called a sprocket in many instances) and chainrings. I'll be up in north york again today (Keele/Steeles), I rarely ride around downtown as I just pass through (on College typically - I live in Parkdale so use the whole length across to Carlton/Parliament if going east) but feel free to say hi. I rarely see anyone on Keele on a bike at all, it can be a bit of a "run the gauntlet" ride sometimes, usually southbound is more hectic. I'm typically on my black IRO Rob Roy. |
Steeker, of course you know Cycle Therapy. You've shopped there (albeit on the main floor - we're downstairs now).
We're at 1114 Queen Street East. North side of the road, down the stairs. At this time of year we're basically a repair/service/special project (bike build-ups, custom wheelsets, etc.) shop but in the main season we sell parts/accessories/apparel to utilitarian cyclists and people who ride a ****-tonne because they really enjoy bikes. Phil's the owner and he comes from a DH/FR/BMX/XC background and has dealt with and grown fed up with a lot of industry bull**** over the years. He may not be the fasted guy to get things done because he's so busy all the time but he also won't give you any BS sales pitch on something just because it's new. John is the head mechanic and comes from a speed skating/track/retrogrouch background. He can make a fiiine ass wheel (be it 404s on CX-Rays or Open Pros on Competitions) and anything vintage is also right up his alley. Meghan's the junior mechanic but she secretly holds the entire shop together. She's always my ace in the hole for when something needs to happen on an impossible timeline. Also, she's a complete genius when it comes to understanding things in a mechanical sense, as in how things go together to work properly. She just *gets* it a lot more than others I've worked with. I track down weird **** for orders and obsess about bike tech. I also constantly promote 29ers and cyclocross bikes and singlespeeds to whoever will listen. Eventually when the store has a budget for it I'm going to launch a little e-commerce site as well. - Mike ... so that's Cycle Therapy. ;) |
cycle therapy is the sh*t! I just ordered everything for my new bike there yesterday and phil is building me a set of wheels. come spring phil will be building up my big dummy. i can't wait! If I HAD to list a con it's maybe that they are almost TOO thorough. if you can call that a fault:D. all around excellent shop. friendly and professional peoples for sure.

Agreed, I took my Rob Roy frameset to CT so I could get the stuff I couldn't do myself done (headset+fork install/bottom bracket/cranks) and I was totally impressed with Phils approach, and Johns workmanship. No hesitation from me with those guys at all, and always a friendly hello when I see y'all at mass or on the road. Back before I knew any of you here, I stopped in on a SUNDAY into CT to pick up new SPD cleats that I needed, Meghan was there and was more than happy to let me swap my cleats over in-store and stay warm - I never forgot that.
It's hard for me to get into the area to visit bike stores when they're open (work in Whitby/North York is time-prohibitive, especially if I'm riding the full commute to/from Whitby :)), so it's few and far between when I can actually visit but always good times. |
You kids and your huge gears... *shakes head* I ride around 68-69 gear inches on the street. That gets me around comfortably at a reasonable clip no matter the conditions or if I'm tired. That would be in the 52x20 range. I don't even have a 52t on my geared bike! 36/46 chainrings ftw. Then again, that's my CX bike. :)

Wes, I don't think I can make it to the races this weekend. Well, I should say looking at the weather, I don't think I want to make it. I'll aim to hit Riverdale.
|
|
Why is everyone in Leslieville who's cool moving away? Next Pyze is going to get called up to Iron Chef and take off to Japan or something ...
|
I'll have to check out CT since it's a five minute jaunt from me as well (Danforth and Greenwood). I've still gotta build up my winter bike seeing as the good weather has put that project way on the backburner...
And apparently I am the only person who used to almost get killed by wheel trans... wierd thing is that I never have bad interactions with cabbies though. Meh, beautiful riding weather anyhow this week :) |
Twitcho is sooo close to Square Boys .... yum. I've heard tell of a Friendly Greek opening up down on Queen soon, we could use a greek place down there..... even if it isn't one of the better ones.
Who else from Leslieville is moving other than Cam? I had to do a dodge and weave to avoid the garbage suck golf cart as it ****zed around the curb lane while the streetcar blocked out the sun in the centre lane this morning, one less cup of coffee required after that adrenaline boost. I hope to bring at least one of the kids .... jees the whole fam?.... to Riverdale for the race hopefully. Keith PM sent regarding the race help you were asking for.... why is 's p a z z e d' being censored? |
Centennial Park is too far to take my nephew in the rain ,so I'll have to pass , I knew a dude that worked at cycletherapy awhile back named Mike .. wheeltrans never bothers me but there is a little canada post truck that runs around younge street that really piss's me off,

I'm planning a two week trip to France next summer to ride. Does anyone have any experience on a cheap way to get your bike over there? Going through some of the Expedia flights and it looks like I'm paying 50% of the airfare to put my bike on the plane. Stupid airlines
Also, anyone here have a hardshell bike box I could rent? I know stores have them for rent, but I'd rather give my money to one of you if possible. |

It's been a couple of years since I flew with my bike but I have never had to pay extra. In my experience airline policies regarding bike transport fees are made to be broken. Be extra nice to the person at the check-in counter...tell them you are going to the "Big Race"....be all excited about it...and lament how you have saved for years to make this trip. There is no hard and fast rule about charging....you can avoid it. |
talk to danhalen. he just flew to europe with his bike last year.
|
I took a bike with me all the way to New Zealand but it wasn't with one of those hardcase dealies, I just scrounged up a cardboard bike box that was being thrown out and it worked pretty well. I guess if you are flying around a lot while travelling, the cardboard thing won't work too well but for one trip, it is pretty good, just use a lot of twist-ties and old T-shirts wrapped around the frame. Or, you could use the clothes you plan to wear and claim the bike-box is part of your normal luggage ;)
|
Oh man, for a short time I pretty much lived at square boys...
|
AFAIK bikes are just considered a regular piece of luggage on flights outside of North America. It still has to meet luggage size/weight restrictions though I think, which means that it will technically be oversized.
That said, the most I've ever paid to travel with my bike (on domestic/US flights) is $45. Keith is right, it's totally up to the discretion of the check-in counter person. I don't think I paid anything extra when I went to Singlespeed Worlds, and that was on Air Canada who explicitly state that bicycles cost extra AND you have to pay if they're over-weight (which mine was by 1lb since I stuffed a lot of extra stuff into the box) and/or over-sized. I never understood the fact that you have to pay for the bike AND a fee if it's oversized. Unless you're travelling with a clown bike (or folder.. or break-apart..), it's definitely going to be oversized. Ah airlines.. always up for milking every last dime out of you. Of course, golf-clubs travel for free! |
I once told VIA rail that my bike case was really a wheelchair. You can't let a cripple down. Maybe I'll do that again!
