hey at least you have windows Traffic Jammer... I work in a security control center... the only sunshine I get to see is on the security camera that overlooks a car dealership.

Sooo tempted not to respond to those alarms sometimes :-p specially when it's some shady dudes checking out H2s

agreed. slow can be liberating, as can riding with flat pedals, normal clothes and no helmet or gloves. but if i'm riding slow i like to raise them handlebars or else it's hello mr. soreneck.

actually i've been thinking lately about how much i don't like wearing a helmet and how i never used to wear one. in fact, went many year of cycling mountain biking and all, without one. now i guess it's like a guilty force of habit. any non-helmeteers here?

I'm always tempted to go helmet-less, but everytime I step out I think - this might be that one time i get ****ed in the ass because i'm not wearing a helmet.

exactly. I haven't ridden helmetless in about 12 years. Sometimes I'd love to just go out without a helmet, but I just can't do it. Even going down to the corner for coffee I wear it. Plus I've commented SO many times about people I see on the street not wearing helmets that I'd feel like the biggest hypocrite ever if I didn't put one on.

I messengered for 13 years and wore a helmet a grand total of about 10 days in that period. Never clunked my head once in that time. 3 years ago, while riding to the shop, I got smoked by an airport limo. Among my broken in 2 places back and broken shoulder was a VERY bad concussion. It took me about 10 weeks for my back to heal before I was able to THINK about riding again, let alone actually do it. The concussion took much longer....dizzyness...head-rushes. I wear one most of the time now....altho it should be ALL the time. The fact is you never know when some jack-ass cager is gonna be having a bad day or just not paying attention. Why take the chance?

Always wear a lid nowadays got kids, wife says she wont spoon feed me if something resulted via not wearing one.

meet N greet for sure. kind of do it any way, but a rock solid date & ride plain would be good.
Cheers

I messed for 6 in Mtl, almost never wearing one and manged to walk away from some harrowing crashes. I occasionally don;t wear my lid now and I feel weird without it. Plus with the kids I kinda have to set an example as well. My daughter did Queen street with me from River to Leslie, she wanted to go on the street.....cool. Now to get them lighter bikes. Hmmmm I wonder if I should keep this Cramerotti and build it up for her instead.

I used to ride on the street without one. A couple of years ago, I had a pretty standard crash, where I sort of went over the bars at moderate speed. I had my arm extended to protect my head, but when my hand touched down, it slid on a patch of ice, and the top left hand side of my face/forehead smacked the pavement. I broke the bones around my left eye, crushed my left cheekbone, and collapsed my sinus, and ended up with a really, really serious concussion. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks, had a 6 hour surgury putting my head back together, and missed a semester of school. It took me 4 or 5 months to regain my strength.

The funny thing is, I was really, really lucky to have gotten off so easily. The plastic surgeon told me I was fortunate to not have severe brain damage, and to have sight in my left eye.

I'm pretty sure a helmet would have prevented alot, if not all of the damage I sustained. I wear one now, as do most of my friends who knew me at the time of my accident.

if you're worried about getting ****ed in the ass, i don't think a helmet will help that (maybe a chastity belt?).

i know how it is; the last time i got knocked over by a car was of course the day i decided to go without a helmet. perhaps i'm at that age where i realize a sense of mortality. i also have to concur with Sweep's comments about the wife factor. i suppose things change when you realize that if you get hurt seriously you are not only personally ****ed, but so is the person closest to you. still, there is something about being out in the countryside with the wind in your hair. but while a helmet won't protect against all serious injuries, wearing one sure beats re-learning the alphabet. it still suprises me how many roadies i see in high park in full euro kit and no helmet.

As I crash relatively frequently, mostly due to my own stupidity (excepting one car where I took out his windshield), I feel nekkid without a lid. As per cavernmech, while (unlike me) you may be in control of your bike, it won't help if someone is changing cd's in their SUV instead of paying attention.

I also see lots of roadies in the spandex kit, no helmet. Good to know there's a lineup of organ donors, should I ever do in my liver.

eewww. you'd have to wear it backwards though.

i had a pretty low speed collision with a cabbie that taco'ed the front wheel, split my lip. i had a mysterious headache after the crash and only found the massive hairline fracture in the helmet when i got home. protect your brain!

no I wasn't suggesting anything... I missed the original post about the location already being set for SF and thought they were taking ideas on where to host it, as I saw a couple of out of country members suggesting Toronto....

the meet and greet seems somewhat very american oriented anyways.... as I lurked through they're developements from the first one last year. Good for them for being able to organize and bond on such a level as to bring people together from all over the country. But I doub't I will be making the trek to SF...nor was I suggesting we go as a group to 'represent' as they say... but I'm not against it either if someone has any good ideas on travel and lodging

I must be lucky or something because I've never worn a helmet and I've never been hit. I have one but I just cannot be bothered to wear it. I wear a ball-cap because it keeps the sun out of my eyes, I guess the new helmets come with a visor and I should grab one. Any suggestions on a helmet to buy for cheap?
