Agreed, I took my Rob Roy frameset to CT so I could get the stuff I couldn't do myself done (headset+fork install/bottom bracket/cranks) and I was totally impressed with Phils approach, and Johns workmanship. No hesitation from me with those guys at all, and always a friendly hello when I see y'all at mass or on the road. Back before I knew any of you here, I stopped in on a SUNDAY into CT to pick up new SPD cleats that I needed, Meghan was there and was more than happy to let me swap my cleats over in-store and stay warm - I never forgot that.

It's hard for me to get into the area to visit bike stores when they're open (work in Whitby/North York is time-prohibitive, especially if I'm riding the full commute to/from Whitby :)), so it's few and far between when I can actually visit but always good times.

You kids and your huge gears... *shakes head* I ride around 68-69 gear inches on the street. That gets me around comfortably at a reasonable clip no matter the conditions or if I'm tired. That would be in the 52x20 range. I don't even have a 52t on my geared bike! 36/46 chainrings ftw. Then again, that's my CX bike. :)

Wes, I don't think I can make it to the races this weekend. Well, I should say looking at the weather, I don't think I want to make it. I'll aim to hit Riverdale.

Centennial Park is too far to take my nephew in the rain ,so I'll have to pass , I knew a dude that worked at cycletherapy awhile back named Mike .. wheeltrans never bothers me but there is a little canada post truck that runs around younge street that really piss's me off,

I'm planning a two week trip to France next summer to ride. Does anyone have any experience on a cheap way to get your bike over there? Going through some of the Expedia flights and it looks like I'm paying 50% of the airfare to put my bike on the plane. Stupid airlines

Also, anyone here have a hardshell bike box I could rent? I know stores have them for rent, but I'd rather give my money to one of you if possible.

We have a hardshell at C.S. for rent. It gets rented quite a bit so let us know a couple weeks in advance and we can reserve it for you.

It's been a couple of years since I flew with my bike but I have never had to pay extra. In my experience airline policies regarding bike transport fees are made to be broken. Be extra nice to the person at the check-in counter...tell them you are going to the "Big Race"....be all excited about it...and lament how you have saved for years to make this trip. There is no hard and fast rule about charging....you can avoid it.

I took a bike with me all the way to New Zealand but it wasn't with one of those hardcase dealies, I just scrounged up a cardboard bike box that was being thrown out and it worked pretty well. I guess if you are flying around a lot while travelling, the cardboard thing won't work too well but for one trip, it is pretty good, just use a lot of twist-ties and old T-shirts wrapped around the frame. Or, you could use the clothes you plan to wear and claim the bike-box is part of your normal luggage ;)

AFAIK bikes are just considered a regular piece of luggage on flights outside of North America. It still has to meet luggage size/weight restrictions though I think, which means that it will technically be oversized.

That said, the most I've ever paid to travel with my bike (on domestic/US flights) is $45. Keith is right, it's totally up to the discretion of the check-in counter person. I don't think I paid anything extra when I went to Singlespeed Worlds, and that was on Air Canada who explicitly state that bicycles cost extra AND you have to pay if they're over-weight (which mine was by 1lb since I stuffed a lot of extra stuff into the box) and/or over-sized.

I never understood the fact that you have to pay for the bike AND a fee if it's oversized. Unless you're travelling with a clown bike (or folder.. or break-apart..), it's definitely going to be oversized. Ah airlines.. always up for milking every last dime out of you.

Of course, golf-clubs travel for free!

Only just discovered the place.... a buddy chastised me for living in the East for a dozen years and not even knowing it was there, despite having ridden/driven past it countless times. One of the tastiest and largest chicken souvlakis I've ever had, and I love their gyro.

Man Ive been goin there since I was a little kid! Square boyz are so damn good!

Anyone been to the The Healthy Greek on Queen near Peter(I think) ? I'm a gyro lover and curious to know if anyone else has sampled their wares.

I hit 35mph (~55km/h?) the other day with my 46x17, that wasn't comfortable at all :p

I'm wanting to build my legs a bit more, and I want a higher cruise speed (aiming to keep the same rpm's, just go faster) eventually - 46x15 definitely feels heavy now, my acceleration has gone through the floor. Granted, this right now is a gear I wouldn't want to push when too tired - the 17 was lovely (around 69/70 GI I think) but I'm working upto it on this one. I'd felt I'd plateaud with my comfort zone/rpms - I just can't roll 110+rpm for long - I'll probably drop to a 17 again when the roads get crap - I ought to improve my spin I guess.

edit: I always wondered about Square Boy - I've been in that area a ton but never been. For those East enders, I definitely recommend Diamond Pizza (Main/Lumsden) and Golden Pizza (on the north side Danforth east of Petro Canada but west of the staggered lights before Sobeys) - Greek-esque comfort type food, really good stuff from my experience - they both deliver in the East York area at least. Now I'm in Parkdale, I kinda miss Golden or Diamond (used to live across the street from Diamond, heh). There's always Rice & Noodle, but that's no souvlaki in a pita with poutine :/ ;)

I went to Spain / Italy with bike this spring and they were supposed to charge me $150 CDN for my bike on the way there and $150 EUR for my bike on the way back... I was charged neither...

I've flown out to Vancouver a few times and have only ever been charged once, on the way back, $40.

Keep in mind, a lot of airlines are tightening up... I went to DC last week and they charged me $15 for my first piece of checked luggage and $25 for the second (each way) - I have no doubt that they'd have charged me the full $75 (each way) for my bike had I brought it... which I nearly did, glad I didn't.
