not sure about the other bikes you posted about, i've seen the giant before, but i forget where

cool, thanks! i have only seen the masi at one of the osaka bike shows and it looked pretty nice...otherwise, i have had positive experiences with rocky mtn. mountain bikes, but dunno how that translates to their road frames.
recommended current t.o. shops? or a link to a decent selection? while there is an irony of helping a t.o. friend from japan, unfortunately, having been here for the last many years, i am not as up-to-date with the local scene to know where to point him.

Happy Birthday Andrew!
Ride your years! 10 at 10 is hard, 80 at 80 is hard... but 43 at 43 is perfect!

Since this thread tends to be a dozen times more useful than the main forum, anyone have suggestions on spoke counts for wheels? On Operator's suggestion in another thread for wheels (fitting the criteria for strong and cheap and not incredibly heavy) he mentioned Alex DA28s which I'm leaning heavily towards. As someone who weighs 185 and occasionally smashes into potholes on Bloor street, any thoughts on spoke counts or alternative wheelset suggestions?

32-36...depending on the gauge of spoke maybe 28 in the front, but I tend to err on the overbuilt side. Ask Keith, he's the WheelMan™, he'll set ya straight.

Anyone checking out craigslist recently?
The Miele for $200 has been getting quite a response, the owner is basically gonna let it go into a bidding war starting sunday morning. nice bike, but seriously, is demand in toronto THAT high for vintage steel?
Re, ALEX DA28's I would totally go for them.. Cavernmech hooked me up last year with a pair of ALEX Crostini's 1.2/1.3 rims and they are very similar wheels. With my zero skills riding fixed, I have hit serious pot holes like the one south of bloor on mt pleasant under that bridge. its basically destroyed pavement that will rattle ur frame, and the rims are still perfectly straight. I probably clocked 1000kms on them so far and they are good.
I have been reading contridicting info on Aero rims and Box Section rims saying that box rims are stronger, but i think aero rims hold their shape better..... looking at the rim cross-section, doesn't a triangle seem stronger than a square?
amull, thanks for the offer, but i think pyze is gonna come thru on this one, thanks much!

I gotta agree with the triangular assertion, at least for vertical strength, which is what I'm most concerned about on our fine roads.

yeah, my only point of reference are 20+yr old box rim ambrosios, which have received RAVE reviews, but they are also laced with a gazillion spokes.

Oh, two good builders I've used are Sean over at Sweet Pete's and Keith, of course. The only poor wheel builds I've had were from La Bicicletta, oddly enough.

I got new mtb shoes and new eggbeater pedals. With the cleats perfectly aligned I have reasonable float in the left and none on the right. What the heck am I doing wrong?

One of the cleats should have a dot on it. It's either that one or the one without that yields more float. CB does that to make it easier to clip out with the dominant foot. They might also make cleats w/o that feature.

edit: a set of the DA28s came with the Fuji Track that I picked up used and they are very solid. The guy from whom I bought the bike was about 210lbs or so and he said that he never had a problem with them and that they had never needed a truing since he bought the bike in 2003...

I found a little Peuguot for my friend but he didn't really like it so I listed it on CL last week. I got about 20 responses in one afternoon and sold it to the first guy who came to see it. The weird thing is that this one person kept emailing me and emailing me, all afternoon, asking to come and get it right away for more money than I was asking for but, since I had arranged something already with this first guy, I declined. When I emailled this person saying that the bike was sold they asked me to give them the email of the guy that I had sold it to as they would offer him more money, a request which I also declined as I thought that would be betraying the buyer's trust. This person emailed me again today begging for the person's email. Crazy. I guess demand really is THAT high.

That is ridiculous, CL is a buying site, not an auction site. Even if it were something rare, that isn't how it should be but for a Miele? Weird.

Don't get me wrong, *some* Miele's are good and ride well, but Toronto has an unhealthy obsession over these things. For reference, look at e-Bay's completed auctions for these bikes. I doubt many cracked $200. There's some sort of hyper-inflation driven by *********** in Toronto
