I saw some familiar faces on that CTV segment but no bikeforumers.

I think I'll be needing to build a new wheel for my IRO soon-while I was replacing the hub bearings on the weekend I noticed tons of cracks on one of the hub flanges. The bike has 130mm spacing. Any idea where I can find a suitable hub? I'm thinking of just using an oldshool cup and cone road freewheel hub sans lockring as I run brakes on that bike. Or maybe I can swap the axle in a track hub-I don't really mind running a QR.

TRaffic Jammer 07-24-06 07:27 AM

I feel kinda badly for not seeing them off. I totally ****zed yesterday.
DArkmother, crackin' flanges? He bad as*ed.

Cavit8? Was that you I saw the other evening?

cavit8 07-24-06 09:18 AM

Yes, I was getting set to head out for a weekend of kayaking. Unfortunately the river water and my contacts didnt' mix and I'm sitting at home with two inflamed eyeballs. Off to the drugstore to pick up some drops shorty. I'll be the guy wearing the old school Vuarnet's. My eyes are so light sensitive it's unbelievable.

Darkmother- I think Surly and IRO make 130 mm spaced fixed hubs.

edit: or at least have them come with axles long enough to fit.

operator 07-24-06 12:28 PM

W!

Hey why don't you guys get in touch with onetwentyeight, the Johnny Appleseed of city-specific FG forums, and start a Toronto-specific forum like we've done in SF and Chicago? It's a lot of fun!

There's not enough for critical mass.

Well, I am back in Toronto after 2 years of living in India, and am out of sorts on where to get good, and cheap, parts for a fix I plan to build up over the next few months. I was given an old mtb with horizantal drops and am looking for a good lbs (living at Danforth/Pape for now). Was wondering where I should go to spend my money. I am looking for a crank, either a 1 piece or 3 piece, doesn't matter, fix hub for 135mm ( I think, no ruler to measure with yet) and a good place that builds wheels. Anyone have parts for sale, I would be interested. I'm not cheap, but broke, so cheaper the better for now. Can't wait to get back in the saddle.

Good to see the Tor/fix page is going strong.

You're right. I'm wary of trying another IRO highflange, as I don't want a repeat flange failure. I think the low flange version will be better-the Surly looks good too. It's not all that desperate-I can always steal the rear wheel from my other bike when this one fails-I'm curious to see how long it will take actually.

After 10k+ posts? It's almost embarrassing.

Pyze, welcome back! Danforth and Pape: you might try Cogs cycle on gerrard. Cavern is a short skip over to Queen.

Parts Unknown in Kensington is an option. I'll see what I have in my parts bin. I may have an extra mtb crankset you can have

pyze-guy 07-24-06 12:55 PM

Thanks for the info. Was going to check out Cavern next week. Would be interested in the crank if it is there.

I have a sweet old school Dura-Ace I have been holding on to for the right project. You are welcome to it for minimal $ if you want.

I prolly have some old wheels in the freebie bin that will work for you. What is on the bike now parts wise? I can prolly give you some other stuff gratis depending on what you need.

You rock my world. Is the axle 10x1mm in those-like can I swap it for one from a modern shimano hub?

It is an old threaded road hub....tons of thread tho so you could squeeze a lockring on there if you so desired. Thread is 10 X 1.

Excellent. Thanks for the offer-sounds like just what I need. I'll try to get down to your shop sometime soon.

Also, what rims do you like these days? This bike gets a lot of milage, and I'm not very nice to it at times.

I build more Mavic's than anything else these days. CXP33 is probably the toughest current rim out there and they don't weigh a ton. Kinda expensive tho. I like the Sun Venus as well...don't know who has em at the moment tho. If you want tough go for aero style....past that it's six of one..half a dozen of the other.
