Bikes: too many too list

In retrospect I have decided to impose a donation to the Bike Messenger Emergency Fund to gain entrance into the free stuff room. Everybody wins.

wtf. I just body checked a mini-van that pulled an unexpected u-turn going through an intersection on campus. Bike is ok save for ripped bar tape.. I have a scrape on my arm and busted knuckles. Dude was very apologetic.. I left a dent and a scrape, he didn't want to exchange info. Fine by me. I think I got him worse than he got me.

I thought karma was set to rain it's love down upon me?!

Was it a QR or did the bum have an allen key? I've noticed a lot of bikes locked up with missing wheels, front or back, lately. It is that time of the year; Toronto gets inundated with vagrants and things go missing. My co-worker bought a Canadian Tire bike (against my advice, but whatevs) and his front brakes were stolen. Those things are 12bucks a pair! Crazy.

Yes, this is depressing. I may have to got some more lockage instead of my mini-brute through the rear triangle. I have a locking front skewer which, frankly, anyone with two vice grips could rip off.

Keith, I'll be by saturday morning. I still think we should have a bike swap. We could join the guys across from your shop

Yeah, I have lockrings on everything I own but still use a U-lock and a cable to secure everything just in case there is a forward-thinking bum around.

I was eating some pho the other day and I rode the Roubaix down and locked it up (within eyesite) and sure enough, a guy stopped to check it out. I like to think he was just admiring it but he was there for about 3 minutes, which made me a bit nervous but then he continued on. He then came back about 15 minutes later and stood looking at it for another 3 minutes or so. I was with 4 friends and I am not a small guy anyways, so I continued to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he was just checking out the neat bike and yeah, he didn't touch it but it is still a bit nerve-wracking having nice things in this city sometimes.

If you want a cheap saddle and post, those are your guys...sketchy scammers one and all.
You think the bike theft is bad? I had a customer the other day that had his tube stolen...not the wheel or tire...just the tube. How much crack does a tube get on the street these days anyway?

I had a guy in a few weeks back whose wheel got ripped off while he was standing next to the bike. He came out to unlock it, look a call on his cell and while he was turned the other way talking, someone just flipped his QR, grabbed the wheel and took off. He turned back around and was like - 'tF?! - didn't even see who did it.

-decide to take street car home, no idea what cash fare is. Get on, ask if it's still $2.50. I only have $2.50. The price is now $2.75. I start telling the driver that I don't have enough and my front wheel was stolen, I don't even get through the sentence and she tells me not to worry about it and get on. Slight glimmer of hope for humanity.
Up here you would've gotten kicked off the bus/train or got a $120 ticket

-call Mike to regale him with my tales.. he gets all macgyver on me and suggests electrical tape until I can get to another shop. ghetto fabulous red electrical tape does the trick.
That's probably not going to hold. I had to walk home the other week because my electrical rim tape moved and exposed the spoke holes. It doesn't flat immediately but any sort of bump and it will puncture. I usually carry 2x spare tubes and a full park tool patch kit, so you can deduce how many flats it took to empty me out before I called it quits.

Not to mention the bike shop charged me $6 for rim tape for one wheel.
