Bikes: cinder cone and CCM Targa
Hello everyone, good to see there is a strong Toronto presence on these forums. I'm going to be moving to Toronto from Aurora (north of richmondhill, south of newmarket) so i can attend Central Technical School's intensive art program for my last year of highschool and I'm frantically trying to figure out what im going to do about getting a bike together for riding downtown (ill be living on Bathurst in the annex). Currently I have a Kona Cindercone (i believe its a 2004) that up until recently i used for trail riding as well as riding around town (bike thieves aren't a problem in my little town) but i received an old CCM Targa road bike from a freind for free so i've been riding that to get places though its in very very poor condition. Basically I dont want the ride the Kona in Toronto because its a prime target for bike thieves and I dont want to ride the CCM because its hazard in its current state and it feels a little small. Im probably gonna try to sell the Kona (anyone interested, eh, eh?) so i have some cash to spend on my new city bike but basically i wanna spend around 300 - 350 and get a reliable but simple road bike with bullhorn handle bars, single gear in the front and either single speed in the rear or a cheap rear derailleur (not comfortable riding a fixie downtown... yet). So thats pretty much it, I've looked at my LBS and i know i cant afford there road bikes plus they would major thief magnets and i talked with Igor (guy on queen st. w.) and he said he could build me a bike but i just read some bad things about him soooo yeah im looking for whatever advice you guys can throw at me as to where i can find this bike. Im new to the city so any advice you have would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Go pickup a used not so new looking bike, possibly single speed for getting around town. Or maybe a fixed gear but don't bling it up. I got one of them budget drx2000 rear wheels from cavern for wheel cheap (intended), but I think he's out of them now. There's also a bunch of beater perfect bike frames at Cavern if keith hasn't dumped those yet that would be perfect as well.
Prepare to spend 1/3+ of that budget on locks if you don't have anything good already. Good as in krypto chain/mini U. And uh don't lock to those o-ring bike posts you see everywhere downtown.
Igors = fence. Run away from that place.
Good Afternoon!

For an economical city beater try Cogs Cycles, he's got some good used bikes I hear, I'm not too sure on other places for used bikes but cavernmech tells people 20 times a day where to go so maybe he'll help you out. Sounds like you'll be able to get just what you want with the $$ from your Kona, in that case most any shop can hook you up
Don't buy squat from Igor, hell it's a shame karma isn't a quantifiable commodity or you'd be able to improve your own by stealing something from Igors shop. Also Uncle..Jakes? on Spadina is a theives shop too.

Cog's is good for used stuff. Also try Set Me Free....they usually have a good selection of used stuff and they only buy at auction so the stuff is all above board. I still have 2 road frames...both 56 cm. If you want to get the beat down off your new bike buy from Igor. Jacob's is sketchy as hell also. Is Bikes on Wheels still doing used stuff?
Many Value Villages also carry bikes that can be used for beaters and they usually aren't more than $40 or so, I've bought some great bikes for my friends there.

Bikes on Wheels has some good used stuff once in awhile. My friend got a cruiser there that she's in love with.

The Cyclemania on Danforth West of Chester has some used bikes as well as there own brand on sale for good prices. Around $300 for some of thier bikes, and a nice Bianchi in the window for $295 I believe. Good stuff at nice prices, bedside manners could be improved abit though.

It isn't that sweet pinkish Bianchi I posted here a little while ago? The one that I am desparate to locate? And yeah, the guy who runs the shop at Ossington and Bloor (original owner, I think) also could use some lessons in manners, he is a bit like Igor in that area.

wow, thanks so much for the great responses everyone. So speedy. It looks like theres alot of places to buy good used bikes in t.o which is great news. I'll have to look around but i imagine ill be buying pretty soon and ill upload a picture when it all goes through. So i guess the Targa I have now isn't worth bothering with? And would it be waste of time to try and sell my Kona to bike shop? Thanks again everyone.

If your targa works, i'd say use that.

it doesn't work very well, front brake is a write off and the back brake isn't so hot either, both derailleurs are completely ****ed and theres a fair bit of rust throughout. Im basically wondering if its worth fixing up or if i should get something from a bike shop. Im leaning towards the latter.

Just read about 2 people (1 didn't make it) who got hit riding on Warden just north of 19th (very close to my house). Hit from behind by some 76 year old guy. Daytime.
Be careful out there...

The Bianchi that someone mentioned at Cyclemania for $295 was the exact same bike that I bought off of CL two weeks ago for $75 but my find was in much better condition. I gave it to a friend, damnit! There was also a very nice Raleigh track bike that he wanted $500 for, not a bad buy and I'm sure you could talk him down a bit.
