Downtown still glows like a beacon in the night, but strangely it's all the home consumers (who aren't home), who are supposed to conserve. Wonky, typical , but wonky.

Industry and commerce is pretty far ahead in lighting efficiency (in a very general sense), but only because it saves a ton of money.

Have you seen those buildings off the side of the 427, outlined in blue LEDs or Neon? I like it, looks super Tron-ish cool.

When I end up getting my own house I see myself going insane with all the energy efficiency stuff. It just makes life more convenient at the same time. I'd Put all the lights and heat on a central system, with occupancy sensors so you don't have to use light switches. Before bed I could click a button on my computer and have the house 'go to sleep', keeping the heat low at night and only turning back on an hour before I get up. It would turn off again once I went to work and be ready for my return. Green roof to keep heat in and reduce envirnomental footprint, nice big windows to let solar heat in, geothermal power. The options we have as consumers is amazing. If I slapped a bunch of solar panels on the outside I'd have an extremely efficient house that would only need to consume net energy a fraction of the time.

Tell that to the assclowns on Cluny drive and see what they have to say.

gokiburi 10-05-06 10:40 AM

or go live in a condo where everyone's charged a stupid flat rate and where energy efficiency is not promoted nor rewarded. &*#^$&*@#()*()$# i used to be an energy miser but condo life has dulled the green in me. it's more of a blue now.

Still amazing how expensive these systems are and just how difficult it is to get permission to do any of these mods. Digital thermometers and timers can do this now very cheaply interms of heat and light, though I would like motion type sensor to turn lights off that have been left on if say no movement in five minutes. Some neighbourhoods you aren't allowed to change the exterior of your house because of the surrounding houses. Don't forget the mini-roof mounted wind mills dumping juice into your fuel cell/battery in the basement. Houses could easily be made into generating stations that would feed the grid once the homes' requirements had been met. Imagine an infrastructure program that could conceivably be perpetual in being able to finance it's own expansion.

Shiznaz 10-05-06 10:49 AM

Don't let the man keep you down! I think of it as a game. I'm pac man eating up all the illuminated lamps (white dots) that my dumb housemates left on (they are the ghosts). As soon as I get home after work I go WOKKA WOKKA WOKKA and run around the house turning off all the lights. I do this before bed too but invariably the kitchen light is on when I wake up.

At least we are leaving on energy efficient lamps!

And the whole condo flat rate, throw all your trash in one hole thing is terrible. Recycling rates at condos are appalling and they're not usually very well built so you lose alot of the efficiency of being in a large communal building.

gokiburi 10-05-06 10:53 AM

i'm wokka-wokka-ing at work though. people leave a ton of those ikea desk lights on for no reason. i need a cherry bonus.

duppy.conqueror 10-05-06 10:56 AM

interesting you guys are talking about this, I saw a house while riding to the bike paths through cabbage patch town and the roof of this house had pure solar panels...was pretty cool...bet theyre electric bills are 0 or close to 0...

TRaffic Jammer 10-05-06 10:57 AM

Anyone know how well Zero Gravity brakes stop in real life?
I've looked at the design and I get a chubby, being a design geek, I simply MUST have them.

Shiznaz 10-05-06 11:02 AM

yeah I have them on all my bikes. They don't actually work; just for show.

TRaffic Jammer 10-05-06 11:09 AM

darn  I was kinda hoping the cam system made for some good grip.

They work pretty well from everyone I know who has em. Crazy pricey tho. Have you seen the new Campy "skeleton" brakesets? They are pretty nice from a design standpoint and even the high end ones are no doubt cheaper than Zero's.

I'm going to venture that a good pair of v-brakes or discs will stop better than $350 zero g's. It doesn't really make sense how road bikes still come with inferior stopping power brakes where there are much better alternatives out there (read: the mtb world).

The finish on those brakes do look really snazzy.

TRaffic Jammer 10-05-06 11:14 AM

they're not ten grand.... are they? Pretend I'm only concerned for the design. Do they stop better?

So will a brick wall, dummy! :D

What if the Cylons attacked though? You'd be totally at their mercy!

Don't worry the (non networked) battlestars are here to save us! Wait, ooh who is that sexy blonde there.

Somnambulant: are you going to do the donut on Sat?

The cam design is a pretty slick way to up the mechanical advantage while retaining a single pivot. Pretty cool design from the looks of them. Never used them, so no idea how well they work.

How much lighter are they than say a set of Ultegra dual pivots? Those things work amazingly well. Can't see spending the extra 250 bucks myself.

Zeros are in the $400 price range...these can be had for much less and I think they look pretty sweet.

Ultegra 330g @ 199 (10s)
ZG - Ti 168g @ 599

and they stop better than ultegra

But you fixed riders don't use brakes so I guess that is 168g & $599 too much for you.

Make you look like poseurs too.

TRaffic Jammer 10-05-06 11:37 AM

bite me, road boy ...you know nothing, you must have read an article about fixed gears right?
