I did EMS and I thought it wasn't much of a job so I left it. I don't think you really need that much science background, you just would have to do really well on the aptitude test to get in. Some people love the job, I just found it to be a tough lifestyle to lead, the whole 12-hour shift thing sucked away your life and the pay ain't that great.

What kind of qualifications did you need for that? I'm assuming like some sort of life sciences degree etc? High school biology? I mean i'd rather be outside helping people than staring at a montior for 12 hours a day worrying about code reviews, product design, team management and TPS reports.

Yeah, the job is good for someone who doesn't like routine, this is very true. I did mine through Humber College and they don't require any high school sciences (this may have changed since I did it) but you must do well on the aptitude test to get in. If you are a mature student, that is a plus in your favour as well. By mature student, I mean over 30, not 21, like in university. You would also have to have some relevent experience in the health care field or some lifeguarding background or some volunteering experience in a hospital or something. I volunteered in St. Joe's emergency department and that helped me get in.

There really are no qualifications except advanced CPR; doing well on the aptitude test and having expressed an interest in being a paramedic (the volunteering thing) was enough to get me in. Helping people is a great feeling and there were some messed up situations, so you really do have to have a calm attitude (you'd be surprised how quickly a person will calm down if you yourself remain calm) and obviously you cannot be squeamish at all.

In the US when I was younger all you needed was a HS diploma or equivalent & then EMS training. I had several friends that went that way right out of HS. I think ability to follow procedures, being quick on the bounce (not tripping out on the scene) & having decent people skills were the most important to them as they described it. Not much in the way of life sciences/biology et al, procedures take care of much of that. Their patients are going to go through another triage by an RN or nurse practitioner when they get to the hospital anyway.

More like firefighter/nurse than nurse, & hard work. I don't have the stones for it being lazy and all, but it seemed like rewarding work, not much moolah.

Life sciences prepares you dick for the actual job, although it may be helpful in the actual training process (ie. you know what a blood cell is etc.).

re: the boneshaker. I can't go out this weekend so it's still up for grabs if anyone wants in. I'm going to try to go out to see it early next week if it's still around although even that's unlikely with all the work I'm mired in (and no car to get to Etobicoke).

Unfortunately, I'm out of their coffee, need coffee and will end up going to Tango Palace Cafe to pick up some beans that are roasted, I think, by Dark City. I think I'm going to have to invest in a coffee roaster.
