Hmm, this will require some research. I don't want to get just a set. I want to start carrying them on at least a semi-regular basis as something we have in stock.

Anyone know of a good place in the east end to practice climbing? The "hill" component of my beaches loops is a bit short.. I was thinking about going out to scarborough bluffs on brimley for repeats.. other suggestions are welcome.

are you wanting to stay in the city as a training ride, sort of idea? |

If you want to do hill intervals in the beaches just start at Vic Park and do the down one street, up the next. By the time you get to Lee Ave you should be tired of hills. Glen Manor and Southwood are personal faves.

I thought coloured ones rolled just like non-coloured ones |
A friend is doing the RAAM and I was asking him how he was training for the hills, and he gave me this list of the best hills in his opinion in Toronto.
In the city, the best hill I have found is at Bluffer's Park in Scarborough - the bottom of Brimley. If you start right at the bottom in the parking lot and take the hill all the way up to Kingston Rd., it's almost 1500m. There are other steeper hills in the city (though Bluffers is pretty steep for the first half), but not nearly as long . Among the hardest ones are: (i) the hill climbing up to the Redway Rd. Loblaws (off of Millwood) from the sewage treatment plant in the valley; (ii) where Lawrence runs east from Bayview (starts down under the Bayview bridge and run up to the Bridlepath area); and (iii) the hills just west of High Park (Ellis Ave, Ellis Park Rd. and the switchbacks up Harcroft Rd.) If you pick the wrong gearing (especially on the Loblaws hill) these are fall-over-sideways steep - a taste of what you'll get on the switchbacks in France. I've done the hill that runs up into the Bridlepath area, and it's a good one. Not crazy long, but pretty damn steep. |

I managed the bluffer's park road on my fixed gear before (only ever tried once), but it was really hit and miss (nearly stalled/fell a few times) and I was *dying* by the time I got to the top. I would have stopped and walked but I was wearing look cleats and didn't want to walk up either. Its really ballsy going down that hill no brakes as there are some turns that are not really doable at coasting speeds if you're on a fixed gear.
I have done it a few times on my cross bike and its still a beast. I think my gearing is too high for it because I still have to grind up it with 38x23 as my highest gear. I am going to switch to an XTR cassette with 11-34 range soon so hopefully that will help. I may shrink my chainrings too or switch to a triple, but the crank and chainrings I am using now are good quality so I'm going to try to stick with them if I can. Ideally I'd like to be able to go up the bluffer's park road loaded with 40 pounds of gear without absolutely killing myself. |
Has anyone climbed the 'mountain' in Hamilton? I was driving up the 403 and thought it would be a nice climb, but I don't know about other roads (i.e. those that you are actually allowed to ride on)

Thanks for the compliments pyze, and thanks shape for carrying it.
It's a nice smooth ride, don't really feel the crappy roads of Toronto anymore on the steel frame (quite a change from my stolen aluminum bike). Oh, sweeper I rented a bike locker at king/john close to my work plus bought a ny u-lock and got the locking skewers from shape. |

Actually, now that I think of it, a friend of mine, myself and my cousin rode up the rail trail on our mountain bikes a few years ago. We rode along Concession street and took one of the main arteries down the mountain. We were riding some fairly respectable free ride rigs(two Konas and a Devinci Hucker) with knobby tires down a four lane, two direction road. If you have ever heard a four wheel drive with big tires on the highway, thats what this sounded like. It was lots of fun, but scary too. |
wicked. 2 levers 1 hand!
