Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@merlinextraligh - thanks for the perspective. I think perhaps deep down inside I'm trying to justify the considerable expense of upgrading my bike at some point :-)

In that case forget about speed and just go with how much fun a lighter bike is.

Interesting read. It looks like if you're a very competitive cyclist (assuming very little body fat), and you want to shave a few seconds off your time on big climbs, then it may be worth it.

Otherwise, probably not. Unless you just want to justify a shiny new ride.

Here's my completely scientific facts with research going back to the dawn of time...

All speeds are average over Mont Ventoux climb.

30 lb bike = 18 mph
25 lb bike = 18.1 mph
20 lb bike = 18.2 mph
18 lb bike = 18.21 mph
16 lb bike = 18.22 mph
15.99 lb bike = 23.5 mph

Imagine a car going 20 mph and a train going 20mph, the car gets up to speed faster but also loses speed faster if you let off the accelerator. Now imagine these two vehicles going up a steep hill...

Might not be noticeable, but I sure love to hit a sprint or hard climb with only 14 pounds under me.

The standard addage, from a study done a few decades ago, IIRC, is that 12 lbs. = 1 MPH.

I don't know, I guess it is to me. When I do a 30-mile ride with 2,500 feet of climbing, I think of it as pretty hilly.

That's why train tracks try to keep a steadier grade than roads.
