Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, but the fact that they actually deployed troops for this takes things from hilarious to troubling.

I need to cut and notch three last 2*4 cross members for the pergola, then I'm done with the most laborious part (I decided not to use any power tools, so no compound miter saw). After that, I only need to fasten the 2*2s and do some trim work some time between now an planting any vines. The end is near. And I mean that in a good, relieving way.

No, Stubbornish.

I'm thinking that I'm going to get rid of the compound miter, leaving the planer as the only power tool in the shop. I figured that this would be the good test as to whether or not I'd miss it. For really repetitive stuff like this, it would be a time- and effort-saver, but now I'm pretty sure that I can get rid of it with no real regrets. Using a brace instead of a drill/impact wrench really turned out to not be a compromise.

They fall under a dual Fed/State authority but primacy goes to the Governor of a state.

It is not National Guard. It is a state militia if some sort, the Texas Guard. I had never heard of them before. They were not actually deployed; their commandant was requested to watch the proceedings. That our governor would be so sensitive to the paranoia of the craziest segment of our society is not surprising, but it is troubling. When total untruth is spouted about our government by radical conservatives, no one of that party will stand up and defend it for fear of being primaried. This is what extreme gerrymandering does to the two-party system. The patients are running the asylum.

It seems to be a joint command composed of National Guard Units:

Spotted this killer Mini pickup out on the ride yesterday. Wasn't that much of a group ride, since we rolled out about 5 minutes later than the final roll out time. We did get to the rest stop before they closed, at least.

Looks like I'm totally missing out on the Silicon Valley bike show today. Rock Lobster Bikes was set to bring out Rock Lobster #2 . What a beauty!

Not exactly. I believe from reading your reference as well as today's newspaper that is is a separate organization from the National Guard units that Texas lumps in with them for administrative purposes. But I think it is a state-run organization.

Short recovery ride today.

Was a good ride but I had a scare mid-ride. Got buzzed by a car passing me. I should have known it, I was on a curvy road and there was one car behind me that was timid and waiting a while to pass. I heard a horn blowing which was the car BEHIND that car. So I had a sense that someone in back was likely being a jerk.

After a minute the timid car passes. Three seconds later the honker passes me and cuts me off as it passes. I would say it gave me around 2 feet at the front and less than 6 inches on its rearview mirror/back fender. Big Chevy Tahoe. I got an major adrenaline rush and droped the hamer/dialed it up to 400W, which allowed me to catch up with the Tahoe at a red light about 1/4 mile after the pass. I rolled up and tapped on the passenger window. Lady looks like a middle class mom in a rush. Yells "don't you dare touch my car!!" I said I just wanted her to please be careful while passing cyclists. I told her she has to give 4 feet, that's the law. She yells back "you should't even be on this road and I gave you plenty of room." The light changed and I simply yelled back "I am not angry (not quite true but I did not want to escalate things), but please be careful when you pass cyclists!!"

Sigh. I don't think I convinced her. She is probably telling all her friends about how a mean and rude cyclist yelled at her and "touched" her car (I tapped on the window).

I wonder if I should think about getting a body camera or a bike camera. That way if next time I don't make it, there will be a record of what happened.

@datlas, I don't go anywhere without mine.

Today was Zone 2 day. Pretty tough, as Zone 1 is bad, Zone 3 is bad, but not as bad as Zone 1, and Zone 4 is almost as bad as Zone 1. But, I have found nothing is as bad as Zone 1. So, I was good, and 13% of the ride was Zone 1, which is acceptable. In other words, bare minimum, 87% of my ride, I was pedaling.

Behind the airport.

Waiting for a train.

I didn't eat any ice cream.

I did get wet. Scary building, that has been seen before, with some scary weather.

It was a good ride, and I get a rest week now.

That is a slippery slope. I prefer to just pretend nothing will ever happen. It may not be true but it is a much more positive attitude. I hate going out for a ride thinking, "Is today the day?"

Even on close passes, like you experienced today, you could forward to the local PD and have them give the driver a talking to or possibly a citation. Public shaming via youtube/fb never hurts, either.

Fly 6 tail light cam.. good tail light and you get to shame people like that on the inter web (and you can give the video to police team mates for fun and follow up).
