Actually, my objection to BOTH Kim K and the guy with the YouTube video is that they both have claimed a forum and a right to broadcast preach to others that they did not earn on the basis of any sort of meritorious credential. They have the right to their opinion, but I certainly have just as much of a right to not give them the bandwidth of my attention span.

I wasn't and am not giving time to either of them - and I didn't watch the video, nor do I watch anything having to do with Kim K. I'm giving time to this online community for the aforementioned reasons of knowledge sharing and community of folks with common interests. I merely mentioned them each as examples of stuff/people not worth caring about.

I just had a flogging by "Funnzie" the author of the video at hand, who took exception at the comment I posted about his video in YouTube, along the lines expressed here. I wrote him a rejoinder.

He does not know me but assumes I am a novice rider and lack any riding skills. All he knows about me is that I disagree with him, so in his mind disagre-with-Funnzie must equal "lacks-skill." How convenient.

It never ceases to amaze me the easy appeal of bad ideas, and how many agree with him and take the time to thank him for having saved them thousands.

Man, if you are not going to splurge on that which you enjoy when you are not working, what then?

I understand that lack of money puts contrains on your choice of hobbies, and it's true that an inexpensive bike can be thoroughly enjoyable, but the argument does not logically extend to wasting money if you buy an upscale bike and you don't race with it.

Anyway, the Dogma is incredible. I used to have an Pina FP3, which was destroyed in an accident, and I thought that was pretty good, but this is in another class.

His argument is just like the debates with mechanical watches. Yes, my little $40 Russian Vostok Komandirskie only is slightly less accurate than a $10,000 Rolex, but why would I tell people to get the cheaper watches? Watches are about the feel of them, not just the value which is the same with bicycles. Any $10 digital watch would be more accurate than any mechanical. If it makes you happy, go ahead, buy it, and enjoy it!

I saw that video before buying my fancy-pants expensive bike; and I had come to the same conclusions as the guiy in the vid.

I acknowledge that a light bike means little to a recreational rider such as myself....but it's nice having a cool bike!

As far as my rides? I had just as great rides 25 years ago on a BSO I resurrected from the garbage; but now, I can also enjoy the niceties of a well-crafted bike. Why I chose to get a fancy bike, when I don't indulge in extravagances in other areas of my life? I don't know. Maybe because riding is my only real hobby that I spend any money on, and I spend a lot of time on my bike?

Or maybe it's because a bike is like a tool; and I do knowe the value of buying good-quality tools!
