Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It had to have a low end group on it. A high end group would be so light that the bike would float on the top of the flood waters.

Canada Day! It's a holiday. Oh... we're already on holiday.

Machka is sleeping in to celebrate, then we're being picked up and headed off to hike up Mt Cheam, just to the east of here. It's a mountain that still has a glacial covering even in the height of summer. Not quite as grand as Mt Baker on the other side of the border that stays white all year, but still should be a great experience.

So, the bank is cutting three people out of my team of seven. Time to go looking. Very seriously.

Sorry to hear that.

I have a friend who is a currency trader. He's looking.

I'm not even really in banking; I'm working on software. And we make money. This is ridiculous.

I took a rare day off from riding and got some chores done - put up three outdoor lights, none of which were straight forward installations, hung a new heavy duty downspout. The excessive rain has been hard on one of my downspouts. Water drops a story and a half in a large size spout and has ripped out the elbows. A nice lesson in hydraulics but nothing new elbows and pop rivets should handle.

I wanted to continue pruning trees but my wife won't let me. That reminds me, time to head to the doctor to get stitches removed.

So, I'm sitting in my doctor's waiting room and there is me other person here besides me. She's a lady on a cell phone talking non-stop at high volume.

Um, so you're having the stitches removed and they're putting pop rivets in? Must be a new procedure I'm not aware of.

So this new guy started riding with us just a few months ago. Nice guy, mid 30's, said he had just started riding a couple months before he started with us. He was already an ok rider but probably a B rider. He has made amazing progress since the spring and is now an A- rider with the potential to be an A rider.

I mentioned this fairly remarkable rapid rise in cycling ability to another rider, and he clued me in that the new guy is a former professional MLB baseball player. So the guy is obviously a gifted athlete. Now it makes sense.

It's okay to grab her phone and smash it, provided you sincerely apologize after. You've been attacked by a shark, for Goodness sake, and the World owes you a little courtesy.

Well, it was kind of a let down. The stitches are gone and now I have a bunch of ugly strips. I should have demanded the pop rivets.
