Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since I don't want to lose any toes I'm thinking I should get some cycling boots for this winter, but I'm seeing that they START at about $200. I'm too cheap to make this investment.

So, does anyone know of a less expensive brand?

or

Should I just buy some non-cycling boots and use platforms?
What size do you wear? I have some Lakes gathering dust.

Man, a good pair of boots is huge in the winter. As soon as you get a pair, you'll realize how much warmth you've been losing through your feet (it's a lot).

As far as the winter indoor/outdoor, I'll say that they biggest obstacle to me, 'specially pre-garage, is the mess factor. Using one bike for both made me want to quit one or the other in pretty short order. Cleaning well enough to bring it inside and avoid having the wife stare death rays at me just wasn't something that I wanted to deal with regularly; the choice came down to keeping it inside (and clean) or relegating it to outdoor duty, giving it a drive train cleaning and keeping it in storage/garage.

The answer, as always, is +1.

Yes, this year I will leave the geared bike on the trainer and use the singlespeed for the outside stuff. I still have to bring it in though since I have no garage, but after I roll it through the apartment halls it should be good to go.

Ha. Be sure to knock off the grime on the downtube with a paint brush while in the vestibule. Management won't mind.

The new carpeting they installed last year looks way more absorbent than the old stuff.

I plan on doing the Computrainer thing at the bike shop again this year. Way better than riding the trainer at home.

I'm definitely going to need a storage rack for my office this winter. I am surrounded by 3 and a half bikes. They're just leaning against my bookshelves.

Except for the half bike. It's in a half box.

The thing I like most about Computrainer sessions at the LBS is the company. There are half a dozen riders per session. Chatting during the recovery intervals makes the time pass more pleasantly.

...ceiling hooks in some lesser used corner one bars up, one bars down, one bars up. Stagger them a little. Your office and garage will be chock full of them before you know it.

I have three in the bedroom. My wife's road bike, my road bike, and the single speed. Then our living room has three bike shaped objects belonging to the step kiddos.
