Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oooh, only 24 days 'til first CX race in my neck of the woods.

There's also a gravel race that day, though.

Tough call.

I have a set of the Lake 237, and I am certain this has the same CF sole. The difference is the BOA closure, where the 237 has two, and the 217 has one. Great shoe, as far as the 237 goes. If you're looking where I think you are, the price for the 217's is awesome.

I have a wide Shimano, and it's an OK shoe. Older, and I can't remember the number.

Sidi has the soft leather upper going for it. As they get older, they mold nicely to your foot. The Sidi doesn't have nearly as stiff of a sole as the Lake.

I've got older Sidi Genius 5's and like them. Unfortunately, right now I'm having a hard time finding size 50 shoes. I've been looking for shoes for a long time, the Sidi's are showing wear and tear.

The place I was looking has the Lake at 115 which is a very good price. If I go overseas I can get the Shimano for about 160.

Ha - thanks for that. No, really...

I saw this when you posted it and it reminded me that I wanted to ask you about a fastener that I'd been having trouble with on an old miter box. I went out to the garage to take a pic of it and, in doing so, saw something that I hadn't noticed previously. It turned out to be, of course, the solution to my problems (the time between then and now was spent cleaning and adjusting it so that it would cut true). Now that I've got this up and running, it's time to get rid of one more powered tool in the garage...

You can't go wrong with Lake. I wear a 45 in every shoe, but a Fizik and a Lake, I would go 44.5.

Always a pleasure.

Fastener? I got grief from ol WHHHOOSHHIEE when I called a bolt a faster. Of course, that just meant I had to use that word 5x more than normal.

I used to love Lakes before the change in distributors. The models after the change must have had a change to the last because they suddenly hurt like hell even on short rides.

To this point, I've only had a couple minor problems: a slow leak in the reservoir (not the boiler) and leaking gaskets in the grouphead, which is a wear and tear thing. Replacing the reservoir was a 30 bucks. The valves/gaskets were 100-ish and an hour of work. The pump looks like it'll be 50 bucks. For what it's done for me, day in and day out, for the last 8 years, I have no complaints.
Thanks for the info. I keep debating. I can drive the 6 miles to my coffee shop every morning (which I do) and get my 4 shot kick for a long time, cost-wise, but having one at home would be nice for convenience, especially in the winter.

...I sincerely hope it is to a more pleasant part of Germany than the urban hellhole that is Frankfurt.

Between my wife and I, we're usually at three 2-shot drinks per day. At a cafe, with a rough $3.50/per, that's ~$74/week. Instead of that, we're at $10-15 in beans, depending upon where we get them, maybe $3 in milk and who knows what in electricity. In any event, I recouped my cost a long time ago.

Having it at home is nice and I'm a huge proponent of having them on a timer; you want it hot and ready when you wake up, and an E61 will take 30-45 minutes to warm through, from boiler to spout.

How far is it to the coffee shop if you ride your bike?
