I have a set of the Lake 237, and I am certain this has the same CF sole. The difference is the BOA closure, where the 237 has two, and the 217 has one. Great shoe, as far as the 237 goes. If you're looking where I think you are, the price for the 217's is awesome.
I have a wide Shimano, and it's an OK shoe. Older, and I can't remember the number.
Sidi has the soft leather upper going for it. As they get older, they mold nicely to your foot. The Sidi doesn't have nearly as stiff of a sole as the Lake.

The place I was looking has the Lake at 115 which is a very good price. If I go overseas I can get the Shimano for about 160.

I saw this when you posted it and it reminded me that I wanted to ask you about a fastener that I'd been having trouble with on an old miter box. I went out to the garage to take a pic of it and, in doing so, saw something that I hadn't noticed previously. It turned out to be, of course, the solution to my problems (the time between then and now was spent cleaning and adjusting it so that it would cut true). Now that I've got this up and running, it's time to get rid of one more powered tool in the garage...

I've got older Sidi Genius 5's and like them. Unfortunately, right now I'm having a hard time finding size 50 shoes. I've been looking for shoes for a long time, the Sidi's are showing wear and tear.

Fastener? I got grief from ol WHHHOOSHHIEE when I called a bolt a faster. Of course, that just meant I had to use that word 5x more than normal.

I used to love Lakes before the change in distributors. The models after the change must have had a change to the last because they suddenly hurt like hell even on short rides.

Quickmill Anita.
Frankly, breakdowns are why I bought something like this. Everything breaks. For much of the crap bought and sold today, that's means scrapping it, but if it's built to be serviced, you should be able to get decades out of it without too many speed bumps. To this point, I've only had a couple minor problems: a slow leak in the reservoir (not the boiler) and leaking gaskets in the grouphead, which is a wear and tear thing. Replacing the reservoir was a 30 bucks. The valves/gaskets were 100-ish and an hour of work. The pump looks like it'll be 50 bucks. For what it's done for me, day in and day out, for the last 8 years, I have no complaints.

Having it at home is nice and I'm a huge proponent of having them on a timer; you want it hot and ready when you wake up, and an E61 will take 30-45 minutes to warm through, from boiler to spout.

ive thought about getting one of these, but i envision myself having one of those infomercial "life is so hard" mishaps where i press it and the cup slips and everything goes flying and i end up in the hospital
the main thing im not keen on is the fact that it uses filters

Sadness. We've lost a loved one... temporarily. It looks as if I have failing pump in the espresso machine. The company that I bought it from has great service and some pretty awesome techs; for DIYers, they're great when it comes to talking through the trouble-shooting and repair/replacement process. Unfortunately, no one will be in the office until Monday, so it's drip for the next week or so. It's a cross I'll have to bear.
