Has anyone seen the 2016 4700 Tiagra yet? On Jamis's site it shows the 2016 Ventura Race with Tiagra as having the wires tucked inside the bars

Thats a big difference, those wires of the old Tiagra were a eyesore.

4700 is supposed to be functionally the same as 5800, 6800 and 9000 in 10 speed form in theory. Cables routed under bar tape, same shifter ergonomics, same front deraileur design etc

I haven't ridden the new Tiagra, but the hood ergonomics and STI levers feels just like my 5800 and 6800. The cable pull feels very smooth, much better than the previous iteration.

I have built several bikes with the new Tiagra. It feels almost exactly like 5800 and seems very smooth and refined. Just like the higher groups but 10 instead of 11 speed.

Sadly what hasn't changed much are the brakes, or at least, they still come with the crappy Claris/Sora one-piece blocks, rather than the nicer 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace shoe/pad combo.

Changing a brake pad is a 10 minute job for both front and rear. There is nothing inherently wrong with the rest of the braking system.

I'm not saying it's a long job, I'm just saying there's an extra cost involved to get decent pads and shoes.

Does anyone know how this compares to 105 5700? One thing I hated about Tiagra and below (and even 105 5600) was not even their shifting mechanics, but their hood ergonomics. I didn't like the way the skinny hoods felt on my hands, and this caused discomfort on long rides. I love the 5700, and while I haven't owned anything better I have no desire to upgrade...maybe a slight interest in 5800 only because 11 speed seems to be "in" right now. I'm hoping it's nearly identical to 5700. If it is then this will be on my next bike.

Yup. My wife has the new tiagra on her bike and it feels as good as my 5700 105 did before. Hoods feel the same as my current 6800. It's a nice group for the price.

Quick question about compatibility. Some articles on Tiagra 4700 mention an adjusted cable pull for Tiagra 4700. Is it just marketing disguised in tech talk or does it mean Tiagra 4700 is not compatible with older 10 speed road groupsets? Similarly to 10 speed MTB not being compatible with 10 speed road due to differences in the cable pull. Thanks!

I'd like to know this as well. I'd like to mimic the feel of 5800/6800 with my existing 10 speed wheels and 'B' quality bike. It is currently running 5700 with 5800 brakes. I don't think I can just install 4700 STI's, as I don't think they would get along well with 5700 (or other non-4700 10 speed) derailleurs. I think one could possibly mix in 5800 derailleurs (instead of 4700) with better luck if they had those on hand...but I'm not sure. The cassette and chain should match the number of speeds as the shifters.

I'm sure someone has tried 6700 derailleurs with 6800 shifters? That would be good test case if in fact the derailleur pull ratios have similarly changed for 4700.

BTW: A full 4700 group is showing as available now at Ribble for under $300 (5800 is $75 more).

Boy, unless you were wedded to 10-speed, I can't see why you wouldn't just put down the extra $75 for 5800.

Yeah, that's true - 5800 is such a good deal. I have a nice set of wheels that won't fit 11 speed and a stockpile of nice 10 speed cassettes and chains; but still...

Actually, all Shimano groupsets for 2016 are now identical. All they do is change the name and charge more or less.
All the parts now come from the same box.
Some compare this new marketing strategy to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

They aren't identical. If you evauate 105 and Tiagra without regard to the user, they share function and form but not build quality. I don't mean that they aren't functionally identical (less a speed), IDK one way of the other, but they certainly aren't the same.
