Poll - Unclipping

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i try not to unclip. if i do, its heel out.
used to have cleats hammered into the sole and the slot was locked onto the pedal with the toe clip strap.
Then you had to reach down, loosen the strap, lift the cleat over the pedal ridge, and slide the foot up and back.
with all that activity, it's best just to stay clipped in 7x24x365 and have your friends feed you as you pass by the house...

Not only is it always heel in, it's always right foot. Perhaps my winter goal should involve learning new unclipping techniques in the name of safety.

Just for curiosity are you left handed?

About 95% of the time I get on and off my bike from the left side. I do occasionally get on, or start from the right side, but it is always a bit awkward.

You're not as much of a minority as I am ...

I unclip my left foot inward, and back in the days when I used to clip both feet in, I unclipped inward with both.

But since about 2007, I have been riding with my left foot clipped in, and my right foot on the platform.

I also unclip at the top of the pedal stroke ... just can't do it at the bottom.

But Rowan prefers to unclip at the bottom.

So ... there's your next poll: top or bottom

It's all a matter of perspective. My standpoint is different from yours

I'm definitely a top. Hmmm. Now I'm curious at what point in a revolution I usually unclip. I think it's slightly before the top, but I'd have to pay close attention to it to be sure.

Today, I went against my natural tenancies. I unclipped both heels anti-clockwise.

Some say you should unclip on the side toward the road crown. I say, always the foot away from traffic, so it'll vary with the country. We had a woman's foot get run over by a pickup truck. Luckily she wasn't seriously injured.

Another top here.
