So...

You ordered the Turn Signal option on your BMW.

No. The plan is to ride over Mt Rose.

We made it as far as Truckee, CA last night. Currently holed up in a Hampton Inn. I'm the early arrival, so coach & I may just meet up here for a little ride before Reno gets in full swing. One of the ideas he floated was Donner Pass, which based on our drive (in the dark) seems like it would be 5 miles up the hill we just came down. I was given three choices of routes with Donner pass being the hardest. I actually just want the prettiest. :)

Donner Pass would be a blast to descend. I drove that back when I hauled the race car, and I remember the signs with the instructions, and thought that was pretty cool.

That's what I was thinking. I remember having to brake quite often to keep it under 75.

Got it used. 2007 model. The turn signal stalk was really stiff at first...

Doug28450 10-09-15 09:15 AM

This looks uncomfortable.

LAJ and RPK79, it looks like Donner Pass would be something like 17 mi/1500 ft of climbing out & back from here. Wow, that's nothing. Probably worth it to be able to say you did it. I still might pick one of the other options if they are way prettier. But otherwise Donner Pass it is.

I was just looking at segments on Strava. I guess there is a separate Donner's Pass road I wasn't aware of. I just came down 80 which doesn't appear to have any segments so I guess it may not by cycle friendly.

Yes, I think we'd be on Donner Pass Rd if we do it. We drove 80 last night and it's an interstate highway. Definitely not bike friendly, despite what PhotoJoe may say. ;)

Darn. :)

Doug28450 10-09-15 11:14 AM

I would like to do a ride like that someday.

At least parts of I-80 are bicycle legal.

Sacramento/Truckee/Reno

And... if you go as a group, you'd be able to have a snack mid ride too! :D

There's legal and there's wise. It would be unwise.

However, the plan is set. Donner Pass via Donner Pass Rd. We head out in about an hour. I'll shoot you some pics if I get anything worth posting.

Gonna stop at the monument?

Whats stopping you? We drove 9 hours yesterday to get here. You could be in the Appalachians in less than that, right? Plus you have a cycling family. Just load up the car & do it. :)

There's a monument? I imagine we will if it's on the route.

It's a beautiful day here. I'm even going to need to take these arm warmers off.

Why do you ask??

It depends where you ride in FL. One of the hillier areas is around Clermont. Here's an elevation profile for the Horrible Hundred coming up soon. Nothing compare to 6 Gap in GA or riding out west, but still not as flat as many people thing FL is.

Yeah, it's at the site of the Donner party fiasco.

The height of the "shaft" of the monument is the depth the snow was when they got trapped there.

I would have to figure a way to get the 12-25 cassette on the cranks and the 53/39 chainrings on the free hub.
