You cold weather riders are crazy.

Hardcore? That's a kind substitute for crazy.

Maybe. I have personally ridden down to around 12F but you need mittens, chemical hand and foot warmers, ski goggles, no exposed skin. That's too much IMO. On the other hand, riding in temps just above freezing is a non issue. Just below freezing is fine with minor adjustments. That's how I see it, at least. I do plan to be more cautious this winter with road conditions, as I had a wipeout on ice this past February which kept me off the bike for several weeks.

it's a sign of what's coming. I spent weeks chipping ice away from a drain in front of my cellar bulkhead door. To prevent water from going over the threshold into my finished cellar carpeted family room. I had to shovel stairs into the snow for the dogs to get to the yard. It's stuck in my head.
Most winters I ride twice a week in snow and on ice. Not last year.

I've been hearing that the Northeast will be spared winter's worst this year due to the big el nińo building in the Pacific. The Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast, on the other hand, are supposed to catch hell.

Personally I like it cold and snowy, it doesn't cause me to ride any less.

Yes I know, everyone has their own limits for how much cold they will tolerate. For me, any amount of discomfort takes all the fun out of cycling. I can go to the nice cozy gym to stay fit and enjoy the scenery at the same time.

Are you considered Northeast? I'm up in R.I., I assume you had more snow last year than I did.

I like riding 3-4 inches of snow, especially new powder (like skiing). Also solid ice on the off road paths. Not so much 2 - 5 feet of snow. If you ski you have a lot of the gear already.

No goat heads here. :)

Left home at 6:30 this morning for a group ride. It was 30 degrees out there. I was a bit worried about the cold but it was actually not bad at all. Looked proper Fred wearing sweatpants and a sweater too.

Like Jonesey said, DA grease is less viscous - smooth, silky, probably faster (you will dominate the club rides! :) ). More prone to washing out that Phil's, though.

When I need grease, I go to the auto parts store and get a 1 lb. tub of Valvoline. That's the best value in grease.

Some wet weather riders like to run trailer grease but that stuff seems too damn thick to me. I repacked with that stuff a couple of times and I swear I could feel it slowing me down. That's probably psychosomatic, though.

Ski season is right around the corner!!! Woohoo!!!

I'm good down to 25° with some nice wool socks, $30 sans-chamois tights over my shorts, $5 thermal gardening gloves, $100 shell jacket, and a thin wool beanie the little lady knitted for me.

The worst is 32-40° and raining. I'm more likely to ride in winter if I see that the high is gonna be sub 30° cuz then at least I know it probably wont be drizzling cold rain.

Nice 50 mile ride today with a good solid group. Temps were nice, but the winds were a steady 15-20mph. A blast with a tail wind, some hard work on the return. Winds are expected to kick up higher (20-25mph) early in the week, which doesn't bother me at all. Tough one way, a chance to hit some fast speed the other..

Duh, you went out the wrong way. Everybody knows to go out into the wind and come back with it. Cycling 101. ;)

Yes, it's sweet when it plays out that way. Not today.

You are nuts :). If I'm willingly outdoors in those temperatures, there are little planks of wood stuck on my feet and I'm not fighting gravity! Who knows - if the biking bug bites me hard enough in the spring, I may have a different tune next year.

I have a head wind every where I go.

Mumonkan 10-18-15 11:19 AM

35 this morning, not quite tights weather, knee warmers wouldve been perfect but i wasnt going back inside to change so i stayed in shorts since today was only about 10min commute, but the cold is coming fast.

ive been out in as low as 2, yet i still wound up sweating cuz i overdressed. the killer at colder temps is the wind chill, you lose feeling in the extremities quick and like billy said it just makes it uncomfortable which takes quite a bit of fun out of it at that point

Ice on the beaver pond this morning.
My thresh hold is 20°f, after that it's trainer time until spring.

I agree. I hate cold weather cycling.

Correct! And they also cover when its time to change your chain in that class, too.

Trsnrtr 10-18-15 04:27 PM

20º is usually my limit, too, unless it's sunny and dead calm out.

smarkinson 10-18-15 04:47 PM

My ride this morning was between 14 deg and 24 deg.

Oh wait.

You guys are talking Fahrenheit.

Nevermind.

101 is balancing, pedaling, gear changing, tire inflation, helmet placement, jersey selection . . . the essentials.
