when i went to music school every one of my professors that were also pros in the industry soldered their own cables, and told us not to waste money on any high end gold plated snakeoil

That's really interesting. I wonder how wired sounds vs Bluetooth, I think there is extra compression to send by Bluetooth.

I need new shoe covers.

Oh man... You asked for it. I finally splurged on the Brevet jersey during the last sale. It is the nicest wool jersey I've ever put on. It's straight perfect. It's seriously good stuff, even at full price, but I have to wait for the sales.

the Rapha?

I used to be a bit of a sound snob myself. Then you realize you're sinking a ton of money into something and all of your friends just want to stream spotify anyway, so what's the point. Those same friends also love to point out how much worse spotify sounds on your system over their cheap sound bar that they got at walmart for $30...uh yeah, it sounds worse, you're streaming crap quality internet radio on a system that is made to hear every detail from the music. Blah!

Well said. When I decided to get off the Hi-Fi merry-go-round I was very happy. Now, I have some vintage gear in storage that someday I will build a reasonable system around.

I never even look at audio forums, they're so completely useless. In the event that someone actually wants to discuss, rather than just have a pissing match, everyone still has a completely different frame of reference. Without being in the same room at the same time, it's impossible to get a feel for expectations and preferences.

SpeshulEd 10-19-15 05:12 PM

Tubes...for the sole reason that they look cool.

I spent a nice chunk of change on the surround sound system at our hold house when we first moved in. Then my receiver crapped out and it was nearly as much to fix it as it was to replace new, so I said f'it after that. Now that we've moved into a smaller house, we have a sound bar with bluetooth subwoofer and two little satellite speakers. It doesn't sound as nice as my old system, but it's not that bad, and friends can stream spotify via bluetooth to it...everyone's happy!

I did splurge on some active monitors a few years back so I can pretend I'm a dj on occasion.

No kidding.

I got worn out faster on audio forums that I have at this place. But, I don't take this stuff nearly as serious as I did Hi-Fi. This stuff in fun, but, I have a different frame of reference. I'm here to have fun.

It depends. Once you get into high end stuff, its very difficult to hear much meaningful difference between them. Microscopic differences, diminishing returns for sure.

BUT, the difference between low end and high end is real, dramatic, and pronounced. So spend SOME money on it, but don't get too crazy.

I don't understand what what your friends' enjoy has to do with what YOU enjoy.

How much will Rapha carbon speaker wires increase the average speed of my Ti tube amp?

12 parsecs

Headed out into strong (20mph) winds tonight and went longer than planned, since I knew the return would be a blast. It didn't disappoint :)

...hey now.:( Don't be a badmouthin' pointless forum discussions. It implies there might be a point to some of this, and we both know that's unlikely.:)

As long as it's tweed, I'm good with it.

And expensive cable is a ripoff. Just be sure to use a large enough gage wire so it doesn't introduce resistance, which alters loudspeaker response.

Really?
