Nice! I'm always worried about rolling SUVs, that thing will never roll!!!

Nobody will ever notice at resized size, though. BF shows it at approx 800x300 on my monitor.

Oooh, the Bathurst 1000 is on CBSSN.

I think this happened a couple of weeks ago, so no chance I can ruin Rowan's day today! :)

We had a magnesium decked mower when I was a kid.

It was fast, light, vertically compliant and laterally stiff.

Did it corner well?

You can't ruin my day. I have to go to work. Ruined already.

I can tell you who won Bathurst if you like ;)

Isn't that roughly like scandium? I know Kona had 'cross bikes made out of that a few years ago.

I don't think anyone would actually use magnesium, just like "mag" wheels are no longer actual magnesium either.

Bah Humbug 11-01-15 02:09 PM

Oh, LowCel, I saw you over on T4R. Can you please tell me how tall your bike is (with the front wheel off) and how much extra room there is above it? I'm thinking of getting one for a number of reasons, not least of which is wanting to be able to take AG's tri bike, internally and vertically, for IMTX and IMchoo next year.

LesterOfPuppets 11-01-15 02:10 PM

Kirk used to make Mg frames. I think they were a little cracky, though.

If you really want next-level frame materials, you gotta go with beryllium. American took some beryllium tubes and glued them to aluminum lugs to make what's probably the most expensive MTB ever, about $25,000 in 1993 money.

I had a 90's Yakota Half Dome that had saddle to bar drop about like that. Modern mtb's don't seem to be set up like that anymore.

XC racers these days don't go for quite that much drop but most run at least a little saddle to bar drop. Biggest difference I think is that not as many non-racers setup their bikes like XC race bikes.

Kulhavy probably has the biggest drop, and a kooky saddle angle:

This is more typical:

No. Scandium is just a misnomer for an aluminum alloy containing just a little scandium. It is just basically a slightly stronger aluminum. Magnesium used in bicycles may be an alloy, sure, but it is mostly magnesium. You are right though. It sucks as a reliable bicycle frame material.

Yep, pretty much the only place you'll find mostly-Mg alloys is in pedals and suspension bits.

datlas 11-01-15 03:22 PM

Paketa makes bikes out of magnesium I believe.

Doug28450 11-01-15 03:29 PM

I remember from high school shop class that we lit magnesium strips on fire with a match. I'm afraid that if I get a magnesium bike it might spontaneously combust when I get going really fast.
