Magnesium burns crazy hot, but it takes a lot to get it started. You don't just hold a match to it like newspaper if it is thick. The very high heat conduction efficiency of it takes the heat of the flame source away too fast for the material to catch fire. In the chem lab experiment mentioned above, the thin strips couldn't dissipate enough heat to prevent combustion. The main problem with it is how brittle it is.

Yes. Pleasantly surprised and amazed. They almost gave another one away.

How can there be so many questions about Mg bikes in Addiction? I guess that sbxx1985 has been away too long.

Pleasantly surprised that the Vikes pulled one out of the hat at the end. I thought they were done for.

...if you really want your football team to have incentive to win, you need to live someplace like Green Bay, WI. In the winter time, bars and the Packers are about all they got. :)

I was in Chicago last month on a business meeting and was able to take in a FB game. The tailgating in the lots was amazing with little space to move down the isles. I heard it was the same even with temps below zero. Tough bunch that know how to party.

i've never herd of magnesium bikes. I think your messing with me.

Matchbox, the toy car company, made one in the 80s. They even sponsored the Swiss national team in 1987, I know because I was n a race they attended in Milwaukee in 1987.

They looked similar to the Kirk pic. May be the same frame.

Edited to add that it may be that Kirk made the frames for a team sponsored by Matchbox, hence the confusion. Anyway, the Swiss national team was sponsored by them and most of them finished ahead of me. :)

Hi,

I'm new here and I'm getting ready to get my first rode bike. Should I get carbon fibre, aluminum or steel? Should I get disk breaks or rim breaks? Finally, what size bike should I get?

Yes

Nickleback and Celine?

Nice to see newbies are still posting about the road bike they just bought, asking if they got a good deal.

Running is awesome.

This morning was the second event in the Austin Distance Challenge: Run For The Water, where each entry provides water access to someone in Burundi (which, unfortunately, I think saw just got into a civil war). The weather was perfect, with a light sprinkle that lasted for the first mile or two (of ten). My goal had been 1:05, improving on last year's 1:11:46. All the running this year paid off, but I got into the same situation I did at the 3M Half Marathon this February; my pace was 6:29 (so right on target) but Garmin gave the distance at a hair over (10.03) so my total time was 1:05:01. Having hit my average pace target, this is one of very few situations I'll actually accept as a moral victory.

Further, the race pace predictor from this says I should be able to do a marathon in 3:02:XX, which would qualify for Boston. I say that knowing full well that there's a huge difference between "calculated marathon pace" and "actually running 26.2 miles that fast". Still, it's better than having the calculation come out the other way.

Next up: Decker Challenge half-marathon.

There was a 5k run on the CX course before, the cross races began. I did not participate.

So much hassle carrying a magnesium firestarter on tours, raw MG frame would eliminate one item from the panniers - those things gotta weigh at least 80 grams!!!
