That looks like a paceline to me.
|
I also think double pacelines are silly. Needlessly complicated to those that are uninformed how a paceline is supposed to work. Which, in my opinion, in 90% of the riders out there.

By normal double paceline, do you mean the one pictured on the left? We'll do this during warmups which allows for conversation, but when things ramp up, we'll usually go to a single paceline. As datlas mentioned, the constantly rotating paceline on the right is the most efficient if done properly.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=486892 Well except a recent slower-paced group ride that was a double paceline in which both people pulling would come off to the left. I was on the right and could figure out how to get off the front. My "partner" just pulled forever and seemingly couldn't hear what I was saying when I was telling him I wanted off. I was trapped and finally just came off to the right like a normal person. :) |

with 30 people it would kinda have to be 2 lines with that many, you probably wouldnt get to the back before the next one pulled off

The problem is that a lot of inexperienced riders want to up the pace instead of just flow through and move aside, or they want to sit on the front and pull which is fine on a lot of rides but not nearly as efficient. |
Exactly. A plain ol rotating paceline is an amazing thing. If folks would just learn what a slight soft pedal means, and quit racing the guy that's rotating off the front, it would be so much better.

We usually ride a single pace line where the rider up front pulls off to the left (or right depending on wind direction). The double pace line is good as long as most know what they're doing. Otherwise, it can bunch up or get a lot of gaps. We had about 30 in the group, probably too many, but it worked.

Why would you do that instead of a normal double paceline. It looks needlessly complex. Is there some advantage to doing it that way?

I love doing a double pace-line like that, it's sometimes a challenge with my club as some riders don't understand the principle of it, which typically ruins the benefit.

My favorite is the gaggle, or a hoard of scorchers, 30-60+, just a mass moving down the street at a high rate of speed, maybe defined by some sort of echelon at the head, everyone just filtering up through gaps to the front as necessary according to the whims of the ego. goes well with a few bottles of red being handed around, etc.. |
When I was in Boulder I saw a four-man rotating "box" on one of my first group rides at the front. I wanted no part of being that close, so I hung a couple of lengths back. It was amazing to watch though.

Face plant on the second lap of the first race at this morning's CX event. Passing a guy going up an off-camber hill. He washed out. I went over the bars. Impact moved the left shifter. I got a fat lip.

It's good you're OK, rjones28.

And I did another, longer, race after that. I did not fall down during the second race.

#goodtimes Has anyone asked you if the bike was OK yet ? If not, let me be the first. :) |

Grassy hillsides are fairly forgiving. Athough, my nose kind of hurt for the rest of the race.

...ouch. That over the bars thing happens pretty fast. Good thing, 'cause it's scary.
